The Public Service Commission rejected a 17 percent rate increase sought by Mountaineer Gas for purchased gas costs in Mercer and McDowell counties. The panel kept last June rates and the interim 33.4 percent rise, which will lift the average monthly bill from about $161 to $215, despite rising fuel costs. Princeton officials noted the tough situation for heating customers while utilities balance profits and shareholder duties.
