Injured owl rescued after I 77 sighting near Gardner
A great horned owl injured on Interstate 77 near Gardner is recovering at a Summers County bird sanctuary. Jamie Baker and Anne Schneiter of Louisville Ky spotted the owl walking on the highway, then sought help at the Gardner exit. U S Forestry Products Laboratory staff assisted in capturing and arranging medical care.

Stormy weather blankets Bluefield area with high winds and snow
A mixed bag of wind rain and snow hit the Bluefield region on Saturday with a 55 mph gust at Mercer County Airport tapering to 22 mph by late day. Flights were disrupted with many canceled and a missed approach noted. Injuries occurred when a trailer blew over in English area and slick roads formed in Northfork. Road crews reported ice on Route 20 Bluewell area while high winds knocked out power to about 2 780 residents across several counties.

World War I veteran Domenic Romano honored at Westwood
Domenic Romano Barrett and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9696 attended a ceremony at Westwood Health Care Center to honor WWI and WWII veterans. La Conda Billips noted Romano, Mercer County's only known WWI veteran, who turns 98 on November 28, was highlighted with his family present. He spoke about the war alongside his children Alena Caldwell, Joe Romano, and Mimi Spry.
