Major General William R. Shafter U S A retired died at his son in law's ranch near Bakersfield California after a seven day illness with acute pneumonia. Born October 16 1835 in Galesburg Michigan he served in the Civil War and Spanish American War earning the Congressional Medal of Honor for Fair Oaks and led operations in Cuba before retiring June 30 1901. He spent his final years in Bakersfield and is mourned as a distinguished veteran.
