In Buchanan County, the sheriff's race swung to the challenger while the circuit clerk won reelection. Bland County voters approved a mixed drink referendum and canvassed results with no changes. Incumbent delegates retained House seats, and Buchanan County also kept its state Senate seat.

President Reagan, welcomed by Emperor Hirohito and cheering schoolchildren, urged rapid progress on U S Japanese trade issues during three days of talks in Tokyo. Officials said he pressed broad concerns over a projected 22 billion dollar U S trade deficit, yen weakness, and potential protectionist moves while signaling readiness to boost bilateral effort through a new working group.
Palestinian rebels backed by Syria pounded Yasser Arafat’s Tripoli stronghold with hundreds of shells while a later truce reportedly took effect. An Arafat spokesman called the cease-fire hopeful but questioned its longevity as fighting raged near the Baddawi camp and loyalist positions.
The National Weather Service extended forecast notes rain today with highs in the 50s and cooler nights near 40. Rain ends Friday with mostly cloudy, windy, cold conditions and highs in the 40s. Sir Paul Scoon named a nine member advisory council to act as a provisional government and prepare for elections in Grenada. He said the group would be Grenadian and free of political ties and would oversee preparations for general elections with international scrutiny. Cubans were flown home by U S authorities after the announcement and two Cubans remain on the island.
The New River Gorge National River celebrates its fifth anniversary as officials reflect on humble beginnings. Park manager Jim Carrico recalls starting with no office or address, now overseeing an eight person team in Oak Hill and planning a 55 mile park from Hinton to Fayetteville with a $13.6 million ten to fifteen year plan. Visitors centers opened this year at Canyon Rim and near Hinton, with more access points and exhibits planned. auto travel and rafting remain key draws.
