Miss Frances Wagner entertained the 43 bridge club Wednesday evening at her Abbs home. Chrysanthemums used for decorations were given to Miss Anne O'Brien as a keepsake.
The birth of Charlotte Lynn Owens, a baby daughter, born October 24 in Pocahontas, to Mr and Mrs Vernon Ellett and family in Vivian. Mrs Owens was aided by her sister and the family is noted as residing in Pocahontas. ST. ELIZABETH GUILD notes follow.
Eleanor Widener receives birthday party guests including Miss Sabo and Miss Ell. Frank Slater, newly enlisted, reports to Camp 15 and Fort Thomas. American Legion meets to plan Armistice Day observance. Missionary Society discusses Amid Persecution in Europe with officers and members listed. December announcements promised.
An all day meeting is set for Wednesday November 27 with a Day of Prayer. A Thanksgiving dance will follow at the Opera House on November 27. The event is sponsored by the Hungarian Reformed church and music will be provided by the Gypsy band from Fairmont West Virginia.
A slide show tracing the history of the Norfolk and Western Railway will be presented at the high school with the social studies seventh grade sponsoring. Teachers Alice Weaver and Reba Miller plan trips to Pulaski for the weekend, joined by Mary Johnson Charleston West Virginia Kate Sibold Packaway Betsy Knight Glen Lyn Bertha Dillon Bluefield and Frances Yost North Tazewell. Tag Day for the library fund raised a neat sum. Seniors absent for illness last week: Pearl Fisher Albert Honaker Jr Katherine Lambert Ruby Farrington Dorothy Young.
The Young Woman's Auxiliary of the Baptist church met Monday night at the pastorium with Mrs. R. H. Bowden as president. Miss Edna Moore served as hostess for the evening.
The Layman's League of Christ Episcopal Church will host its November dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W J German on Tuesday November 12.
The Hungarian Reformed Federation branch 49 held a Saturday banquet in the church basement with many guests. Proceeds will be used to buy an American flag.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service met at the First Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon with vice president Mrs. L. B. Crawford presiding during the illness of president Mrs. C. M. Harry. The program focused on The Sharing Message with devotional led by Mrs. E. L. Head and organ music by Mrs. J. K. Sult.
In Pocahontas the Roosevelt ticket won 271 votes to 124 for Willkie with 399 total votes cast. One vote went to Babson. For senator Harry Byrd led with 341, Bernstein 12, Alice Burke 6. For congress Flannagan had 213 and Parks 180.
The Methodist Woman's Society of Christian Service held a Tuesday gathering from 10 30 a m to 3 00 p m at the church with a 10 00 a m covered dish luncheon The study focused on Scarrett College and proceeds go to the institution A large group of ladies attended and participated in the program.

B Bertok pastor announces worship at 10:30 morning and 7:30 evening services. Prayer meetings are set for Tuesday Thursday and Saturday at 7:00 pm in preparation for Ajbor Aldoz on Sunday morning November 17.

After weeks of study the Pocahontas high school safety patrol organized on Friday morning. Sergeant Ira Ratcliffe of the Virginia state police presented belts and badges to Captain Nick Lotito Lieutenant Edward Harmon and 13 others making a total of fifteen boy patrolmen joining the Junior Police Force of the Nation. Reverend Father J A McNulty spoke on the local need for patrolmen and cited real incidents illustrating patrol presence.
A school plans social events for patrolmen who serve until February 15 before becoming assistants. Miss Helen Caldwell leads the ceremonies and sponsors the safety patrol with co-sponsors Miss Mary Harvey and DuPuy Wagner. Local Princess Pocahontas Chapter Eastern Star members attended the Grand Visitation at Northfork, with Mrs Nell Price and Mrs Nell Waldren among the visitors.
The Christ Church guild met Wednesday afternoon in the church rec tron. President Mrs. C. C. Haga opened the session with Rev. Edward W. Hughes leading devotion. Delegates Miss Eding Hughes Mrs. H. M. Noel and Mrs. C. C. Haga reported on the twenty first annual meeting of the Woman's auxiliary to the national council in the diocese of southwestern Virginia held in Martinsville October 29 30 31.

R W James returns from Columbus Ohio after death and burial of his brother. Janet and Jean Vawter daughters of the Vawter family ill for two weeks on Centre street. B H Lively of Fayette County West Virginia takes a position at Pocahontas Colliery store. Mrs M R Gibson returns home after a week as patient at Bluefield Sanitarium. Mr and Mrs William Ed Jennings move to Bluefield West Virginia for sales work with Starcher Conley motor company. Ralph Widener spends weekend at home in Glade Springs Virginia. James Safewright of Richlands visits town. Mr and Mrs Fred Frazier Mr and Mrs Joseph Maupin and son Eugene of Bristol visit Rev C M Fisher and family.
Mud Fork Virginia correspondent reports Hughie L Garvin aboard the U S S Tuscaloosa visiting his grandmother Mrs Maggie R Tabor before returning to the navy. A birth is announced for Ray Myers with mother and baby doing fine.
Mr and Mrs Grant Iveston of Waynesboro Va visited their parents here over the weekend. Miss Minnie Sparks of Washington DC was in Tazewell to visit relatives and friends. Mrs J W Perry and Mrs W Albert Peery visited their daughter Farmville State Teachers College over the weekend. Mrs M H Whittaker, sick for three weeks, is able to be out again at home with her daughter Mrs C H Williams. Mrs Spencer Bayes of Richmond was guest Thursday of her sister and mother, Mrs C H Williams and Mrs M H Whittaker.
The defense program standardization effort hinges on an announced goal to produce 40,000 air-cooled big engines in two years. About half will be of one type and half another, signaling a major procurement and manufacturing push.
Local N W railway workers found sections of steel rail from one to several feet scattered beside tracks. A Kingsport Tennessee carload was diverted to Ironton Ohio steel works and 6 to 7 tons removed, likely by someone riding the car. Investigators from the company arrived to recover material and explain motive remains unclear.
The state highway commission signs an agreement to assume maintenance of Route 61 within North Tazewell limits. A prior arrangement was reversed due to encroachments, but after town acquisitions and easements, maintenance duties return to the state. Also reported is the relocation of Resident Engineer Pp. O. Bailey to a new Burkes Garden Siding facility and a Red Cross drive led by Mrs. Robert Gillespie aiming to recruit 1,500 members in Tazewell County with emphasis on home and disaster services.
County agent B M Phiode reports Four H projects at the Tazewell Virginia Baltimore Fat Stock show. Fourteen calves fed by 13 boys earned 1602 41 in receipts with 1292 95 expenses a 309 46 net. Prize money 401 plus top prize 63 for Charles Robert Pap Ireson. next week his calf to Chicago International Livestock Exhibition. Six lambs earned 159 prize money. Priode plans 18 to 20 head next year including Angus Hereford Shorthorn.

Tazewell county draft board Number 2 covering Maiden Spring and Jeffersonville districts works on order numbering and registration cards before mailing questionnaires. It will take weeks to conscript as 17 men have waived orders by volunteering to the board while 3688 men have registered under the selective service act.
The November term of Taze well circuit court will be convened on Tuesday by Judge A. C. Buchanan. A grand jury has been summoned to investigate violations from the preliminary court. The civil docket is set for hearing next week and criminal actions listed for trial the following week with separate juries for the two phases.
The county board approved a $100,000 bond issue ratified by Maiden Spring voters on October 4 to fund school improvements at 5 percent interest with bids due December 7. The session also funded state convict camp support in Tazewell county and set up delinquent tax collection with 50,000 information cards for 1916–1938. The D A R heard reports and noted grave marking progress in Confederate cemeteries.

Mrs J L Mason treasurer recounts over $1000 spent last year to control county tuberculosis leaving only $18 on hand. Funds are insufficient for sanitarium laundry and related costs until a sale finishes and an appeal for subscriptions is planned. Mrs Kitts notes five county patients need treatment but cannot be admitted until after the campaign. Tazewell’s quota is set at 1254.93 dollars.
W J German general superintendent for Pocahontas Fuel Co spoke at the annual Armistice Day observance in Memorial hall on Friday evening.
Rev. T Paul Simms newly appointed pastor of Main Street Methodist church was guest speaker at the Tazewell Rotary luncheon at North Taze well church Friday. Simms formerly served in Clinton Tennessee for four years and previously on the West Graham circuit.
