Young Republican leaders from multiple states opened a three day convention in Des Moines with about 150 delegates as George Olmsted urged a rising youth movement to shape national policy. Senator Dickinson warned of national dangers and urged youth to oppose the New Deal while the executive committee outlined the rest of the meet. WPA meanwhile announced an 11 million dollar statewide relief construction allotment with 20 thousand workers next week and a plan to shift many employable relief cases back to work programs.
The Bluefield Red Cross chapter aims to enroll 1400 members in three days during its Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Roll Call. D. C. Duncan leads the drive with scores of workers starting Monday morning, as Dr. T. E. Peters chairs the chapter with hope to top last year’s 1500. The committee includes Mrs. John Kee, Mrs. John F. Nash, and Mrs. William Greenspon.
Charleston announces bids due November 26 for six road and bridge projects totaling about 354000 dollars. Projects include Cabell-Mud River bridge on U S route 60 with multiple spans, Morgantown Walnut street bridge flooring, Canvass to Brooks on state route 39, Sam Black Daweon road, Breedlove Brookside road, and Moorefield Baker road improvements.
The Ethiopian government says a first major counter-offensive has begun to envelop Italian forces around Aduwa and advance toward Makale and Gorrahei. Haile Selassie mobilizes half a million troops by November 20 with artillery and rifles sent to Addis Ababa, as Danakil tribes defend the Addis Ababa Djibouti railway.

The Baltimore and Ohio railroad asked the public service commission to cut coal freight rates from Mason county to Ohio river division points to 70 cents a ton from current 88 cents to $1.01. Rates would run until April 20. The commission also delayed a hearing on Forest Hills Land Co. request to discontinue water service at Forest Hills Wheeling suburb, with the service claimed to operate at a loss.
Observances mark the 17th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice as religious groups pray for peace amid conflicts in Ethiopia. President Roosevelt speaks at Arlington with Weygandt and a Paris bugler broadcast. In New York, the York visits and Mme. Schumann-Heink becomes first president of a Chicago VFW post.

Walter L. Fisher 73 former secretary of the interior died in his Hubbard Woods home after a heart attack. An attorney and public figure since 1888 he was Taft's interior secretary in 1911 amid the Ballinger controversy. He practiced with Fisher Boyden Bell and Marshall and chaired conservation efforts. Born Wheeling West Virginia he studied at Marietta and Hanover.
Detroit with new car models boosting activity reports the industrial employment index at 101.9 for October, up 22 percent from September and well above 1934 levels. Welfare costs fell by 500000, while 5000 more workers joined private industry and 50 percent of relief declines credited to private hiring.
