Richlands Virginia reports rising demand on food pantries after hurricanes. Good Samaritan Food Pantry manager Ralph Moon Mullins says salvage food from Second Harvest has dropped to two or more pallet loads per month, up to 3100 monthly visitors, with costs rising from seven to nineteen cents a pound. Local schools churches and civic clubs have aided with donations including Richlands High School's 2500 cans and 1350 dollars. USDA commodities are distributed twice monthly to about 500 families each month.
At the 2008 Rail Fest held at the Herb Sims Youth Center in Bluefield, families enjoyed HO scale engines and detailed miniature landscapes. Four year old Chase Cole and other visitors watched trains pass through coal mines, lakes, and circuses under tents as organizers from the Pocahontas Chapter National Railroad Historical Society highlighted railroad heritage and hands on modeling. Vendors sold engines, freight cars, buildings, and scenery items while volunteers explained module layouts and track construction.
