Downtown Bluefield and South Bluefield invite residents to a one day Taste of Our Town event on Saturday November 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A detailed notice appears on pages B8 and B9 with event specifics and participating venues.
The schedule lists events from Noon today with the Virginia Black Lung Association meeting in Oakwood to a 7:30 p.m. Bluefield Knights Templar gathering at the Masonic Hall. Gov. George Allen halts the planned execution of Joseph Payne three hours before the scheduled injection. He reduces Payne's sentence to life without parole after jury members and the victim's mother urged he stop, amid the Supreme Court ruling against Payne's final appeal and new witness scrutiny.
About 200 residents filled the Tazewell Middle School auditorium to oppose plans for a new courthouse. County Supervisor Chairman Jimmy Jones moved the meeting from the juvenile and domestic court to accommodate the overflow crowd. Public comments urged halting any new construction and suggested studying renovation of the existing courthouse instead, though legal questions about voting on such a motion remained unresolved.
President Clinton praised Warren Christopher as an elder statesman and said he would seek his counsel on picking a successor. Christopher, 71, said the time had come for someone else to pick up the baton and urged a candidate with force and stamina to push diplomacy forward. Madeleine Albright was named as a possible successor and the White House planned to consult Christopher’s advice.
Bluefield planning committee mails over 250 fund raising letters to local businesses with tax deductible contributions. City Treasurer Cromer leads efforts and will also contact contributors to the East River Mountain Overlook restoration project. The festival runs from Thanksgiving weekend to early January with snowflake installations inside the city park.

President William Sherwood praised gains and urged continued regional growth as 1997 plans focus on expanding membership from 314 in 1996 toward 500.
