Fireman Dies as Studio Blaze Hits Union City
In Union City New Jersey a studio blaze in the business district left one fireman dead and 30 overcome by smoke. The dead man was John Beckner 52 of Union City. Three firefighters are critically ill and eleven others treated after the blaze damaged seven stores and offices. An emergency hospital was set up in a Bergenline Avenue dress shop as Red Cross and Salvation Army units assisted.

The FBI announced the arrest of Joseph R. Roth, 40, of Washington on charges of sending a 200000 dollar extortion letter to Sherman Fairchild, chairman of Fairchild Aircraft Corp. He allegedly extorted 25000 dollars from A J Eckhardt of Baldwin Long Island, a Fairchild executive, under threat of death. Authorities say Roth warned payment by Armistice Day or Christmas. He was to be arraigned before a U S Commissioner.
