The Senate again defeats two soldier bonus bills as amendments are disposed of quickly. Thirteen Republicans join Democrats to pass Walsh provision for graduated tax on transfers of property by gift by every person.
The revised tax bill cleared the Senate at 1 55 a m after a more than fifteen hour session. The measure now faces House approval before it goes to the President. The vote was 30 24 with Lafollette Norris and Moses voting no and Broussard supporting.
Washington reports late night action as the Senate, after more than fifteen hours in continuous cession, drives to pass the tax revision bill before adjournment. Debate centered on Simmons and McKellar amendments to fund veterans’ benefits, both rejected by decisive votes.

Mrs. Perry Conkle was indicted by the Ohio county grand jury for the death of Mrs. Pearl Williams, who was shot in her Chapline Street apartment two weeks earlier. Conkle claims the victim had alienated her husband’s affection.

Reports from Pittsburg district say miners largely returned to work after the Pittsburg Coal Producers Association recalled a strike order. The UMWA district officials confirmed continued check-off until court orders change, and the decision followed the Seventh Circuit’s ruling suspending Judge Anderson’s injunction.

Ancil Drew, a Princeton coal miner, pled guilty in circuit court to perjury and rioting related to a June disturbance in which Ayrshire District Collieries workers were driven from their homes by vigilantes who claimed they were foreigners. The perjury charge carries two to twenty-one years in state prison. rioting is a misdemeanor. More than eighty defendants face rioting trials and eleven on riotous conspiracy charges.
