President Hoover issues the first of its kind proclamation calling for a national day of thanksgiving on November 28 1929. He urges worship at churches and a simple White House family meal while Americans rest from work and share with the less fortunate.
In Washington the administration group in the Senate backed a Barkley backed 75 cent pig iron duty after 48 to 30 vote. Reed argued for 1.50, Norris and Harrison opposed. Democrats and Western Republicans favored the reduction with 19 Republicans joining 29 Democrats. Debate over metals and manganese continued as the session adjourned.
The Interstate Commerce Commission conditionally allows the New York Chicago and St Louis Railway to issue a 20 million dollar promissory note. Proceeds fund certificates of Wheeling and Lake Erie stock. Notes sell at not less than 98 percent of par plus accrued interest.
Washington reports the District of Columbia grand jury may decide tomorrow whether to summon additional witnesses connected to a Wall Street booze party attended by senators. District Attorney Leo A. Rover asked for guidance as the jury, after a brief 15 minute session, weighs subpoenas and whether to call W. W. Atterbury and Otto H. Kahn among others. Senator Brookhart had disclosed prior testimony in the Senate.
In Kanawha county intermediate court judge and jury heard evidence in the April slaying of Isaac C. Phippe. James Mullins 21 faces a murder charge. Final arguments are scheduled for tomorrow as the defense seeks to clear his name amid a quarrel claim involving Mrs Mullins.
The senate reduced the tariff on pig iron while the Southern Tariff association plans were aired before a senate investigating committee. Paris November 6 The new Tardieu cabinet set to present its policy to parliament tomorrow as Radical Socialists vote against it on party discipline. The ministers issue a communique declaring unity on all policy points and urging debate on general and foreign policy.
Washington reports the Southern Tariff association aims for a high sugar duty in the pending bill. J. A. Arnold, the association’s vice president, says the president is the target and that public sentiment would shape policy. Arnold to return for further questioning. Bethlehem Steel’s C. A. Buck may follow on manganese free-list action.
A 12 year old boy named Edward Moran testified he signed a murder confession only to go home to his mother. He denied killing widow Clara Hewes 76, saying detectives forced the confession. He claimed a scuffle occurred when Mrs Hewes caught him attempting to steal $3. The judge adjourned the case without a decision.
Six of eight aboard a fogbound German airliner from Croydon to Berlin were killed after it crashed into a wooded hillside near Marden Park Surrey. Prince Eugene Schaumberg Lippe and Commander Glen Kidston escaped amid flames. Kidston and another crew member were badly burned. Victims included G. P. Milne Calcutta G. S. Gaspar Sr London and D. L. Jones Stockwell. Pilot Rod Schinka, Mechanic Ulrich and Wireless Operator Niklas perished.
A solitary robber entered the Abbottetown State Bank near York Pennsylvania and took 1100 dollars from the counter after forcing cashier Wilson Bream into the vault. He locked the door and fled. Bream remained in the vault for about half an hour until other depositors released him.
A Porto Rican record for speedy justice was made at Cimucao yesterday when Lino Rodriguez killed Juan Durgado with a knife, was arrested, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to thirty years' imprisonment all in the same day.
The War Department announced a robot to fly large transport planes, using two gyroscopes and three clutches to stabilize attitude. Dessau Germany November 6 The G-3 giant land plane with 3200 horsepower and 150 foot wingspan successfully completed its initial flight. Powered by four engines two 700 hp and two 400 hp features a tailless design and brakes on a rear wheel.
Martinsburg on November 6 Thomas Myers nine year old son of Mr and Mrs William Myers was accidentally shot and killed by Wesley Faulkwell fifteen also of Martinsburg The two boys and several others were returning from a country trip Myers was struck through the neck the bullet severing the spinal cord An inquest is scheduled for tomorrow and Faulknell claims the shooting was accidental.
Burt Buckley former state treasurer surrendered in Cincinnati and was taken into custody for a two and a half year federal sentence in Atlanta. He was convicted of conspiring to bribe a federal prohibition official to protect the brewing company.
Hamilton acquitted of murdering his son in law Tom Walton Jr. in his Amarillo office last May 4. Verdict read on the third ballot. Hamilton not present. He tells reporters his conscience is clear as friends and his daughter Theresa celebrate in the hotel lobby. He is a former Texas Supreme Court appellate judge and longtime Texas attorney.
Guatemala City reports the Santa Maria eruption has killed more than 400. The event, begun last Saturday, stands as one of the Americas' gravest volcanic disasters, with lava continuing to flow but causing no major new damage.

Jurors convict Mrs. J. Marjorie Berger, Hollywood tax counsellor, of advising Dorothy Schall to falsify income tax returns. She faces up to five years and a $10,000 fine on two counts, with sentencing set for November 11. Counts against other film figures were dropped.
Eighty six American soldiers whose bodies arrived from Leningrad lie in state in Havre France after transfer from the Soviet warship Lieutenant Schmidt. Full military honors were given as French infantrymen presented arms. The bodies will depart for the United States on regular passenger ships escorted by warships outside French waters. Departure dates await final approval.
An unexpected break in stock prices unsettled Wall Street with many leading issues dropping $10 to $20 a share and some specialities losing up to $100. The New York Stock Exchange closed early at 1 pm with 5.91 million shares traded and a frantic late rush of sell orders.
