Republican Jim Gilmore defeated Don Beyer with 56 percent of the vote as GOP candidates won the top three statewide offices in Virginia. Beyer conceded, noting Democrats would fight Gilmore’s proposed car tax cut in a Senate with a 20 20 split. Earley and Hager won attorney general and lieutenant governor respectively.
MELODY KINSER reports in Richmond that Mark Earley and John Hager won attorney general and lieutenant governor races, giving the GOP a sweep and control of the Virginia Senate for the first time since Reconstruction as Governor-elect Jim Gilmore leads. Hager's win makes the three-seat GOP victory complete with a 20 20 Senate split before the January convening.
In a tight race for the Virginia House, Democrat John H. Tate Jr. won reelection in the Fifth District with 8,522 votes to Republican Barnes Kidd’s 8,114. Tate carried Smyth and Tazewell counties, while Kilgore won the First District decisively. Kilgore praised campaign organization and anticipated Gov elect Gilmore’s agenda.
In the race the vote counts show 8,114 votes amounting to 49 percent. Clarence E. Bud Phillips is a Democratic candidate for the 2nd District. Jackie T. Stump is the incumbent Democrat in the 3rd District. Omas M. Jackson Jr. is the incumbent Democrat in the 6th District. Thomas G. Baker Jr. is the incumbent Republican in the 7th District.
Local voters respond to Virginia House results and national election developments. Turnout reflects interest in district races and key issues influencing turnout patterns and candidate sentiment across the area.
West Virginia leads in school breakfast, with 100 percent participation. Nationwide, NEA finds twice as many schools offer breakfast as a decade ago, yet about 25,000 schools still do not. Virginia ranks 19th with 86 percent. Teachers note breakfast boosts attention and reduce morning irritability, while more two income families use the program. Started in 1966, the $1.1 billion program persists despite political attempts to shift control.
