The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of showers today with highs near 60. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph shift to northwest 10 to 20 mph. Tonight mostly cloudy with a 30 percent shower chance and lows in the upper 30s. Tomorrow partly cloudy in the mid to upper 50s, followed by Thursday and Friday partly cloudy with mid 50s to low 60s highs.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.57 points to 1389.68 as the market paused after a strong rally last week. Whitey Herzog of the St. Louis Cardinals was named National League manager of the year, beating Pete Rose by one vote. West Virginia aims to cut illiteracy from 25 percent to 7.5 percent by 1990 with coalition help.
The merger of Kersey Manufacturing and American LaFrance Company will create 80 new jobs and an annual payroll of 1.3 million dollars. Kersey president Ed Shaffrey said production of a top-of-the-line fire truck will start next year at the Elmira based firm.

ABINGDON Virginia Bluefield Supply Company executives and board members deny violating terms of a proposed merger with W. Jack Davis of Coeburn in a multimillion dollar civil suit filed in U S District Court last October. Officials say Davis effectively withdrew and terminated the deal when he lowered his offer from 20 to 18 dollars per share.
Princeton ROTC officials say no official investigation is under way after Maj. Raymond McKinney protested a scheduled speech by Rev. Motalepula Chabuka at Princeton High School. ROTC region official Allen Gardner said facts are being gathered and noted limits on speaking as a military officer while in uniform.
President Reagan linked deployment of the Star Wars defense system to nuclear disarmament, saying the shield would not be erected until the United States and the Soviet Union abolish missiles. White House aides stressed the plan could deploy despite Moscow's stance if needed.
Democratic candidate Gerald L Baliles and Republican Wyatt B Durrette pitched their case to voters as polls opened from 6 am to 7 pm amid rain likely reducing turnout. The vote decides governor lieutenant governor and attorney general for four years with 9th district ballots listing three unopposed incumbents in the 3rd 4th and 5th districts.
W R Davis, an 11 year Princeton Police Department veteran, was named the city's new police chief by City Manager Jim Juhl at Monday night's council meeting. Davis succeeds George W Johnson after three years as administrative assistant to the chief. Davis, 48, a Matewan native and Princeton resident since 1941, has risen from patrolman to sergeant and lieutenant.
