Arms Seized From Soviets As Grenada Evacuation Proceeds
U S Army officers seized 38 loaded rifles five pistols ammunition and bayonets from Soviet diplomats trying to smuggle weapons onto planes evacuating Grenada evacuees. The 49 Soviets were among 126 Communist bloc diplomats Cubans and dependents flown from Point Salines to Merida and on to Havana. Congressmen led by Rep Tom Foley visited Grenada for three days to press for withdrawal of U S forces. About 1 800 soldiers returned to Fort Bragg with 4 000 more left on the island awaiting further pullouts. State Department officials said the arms search was legal and the weapons included 38 AK-47 rifles.

A 74 year old Elkhorn man Sylvester Tucker and his wife Stella, 70, were killed when their Pontiac drifted into the path of a Mack truck on U S Route 52 near Maitland Bottom. Marshall Crawford, 37, of Lindside, drove the truck and was uninjured. The incident occurred around 11 55 a m one mile from Welch city limits. Funeral arrangements were being finalized.
