A 21-year-old Lincolnton deputy formerly from Tazewell County Virginia died after apparently discharging a handgun at his home while examining it. Chris Coxton was pronounced dead on arrival at a Lincolnton hospital. Funeral services are set for Lincolnton with burial in Bluefield area.

Wells Commended By Supervisors In Tazewell County

Tazewell County supervisors commended acting Water and Sewerage Authority director Carter Wells for declining a raise after Norman Cook left the post to run for county treasurer. Wells, a county building inspector, will keep his current salary. Officials discussed district map changes and a Cavitt's Creek water pipeline study, with a 12 mile proposed pipeline and plan to begin soon.

In Johannesburg the referendum produced a thunderous yes to a constitution creating separate chambers for Asians and mixed-race people. State Ranks 47 In College Funding

West Virginia ranks 47th in the nation for the rate of higher education funding increases over the past two years. The Chronicle of Higher Education notes a 4 percent nominal rise, but inflation-adjusted funding fell 5 percent. Over 10 years, appropriations rose 144 percent, yet inflation-adjusted growth was 8 percent, ranking 33rd on that measure.
