Mercer County Schools levy passes after special election
After 10 days of early voting and a one-question ballot, Mercer County voters approved a new five-year excess levy for the Mercer County Schools. Final unofficial totals: 3,161 for and 1,648 against, with turnout described as mediocre. The levy funds roughly 10 percent of the district budget, supporting staff, coaching supplements, textbooks, activities, maintenance, and operating costs.

Former Va. trooper sentenced to two years in bribery case
ABINGDON VA A former Virginia State Police special agent was sentenced to two years in federal prison for bribery obstruction of justice and making false statements to the FBI. Shade Carlton Workman, a former member of the Tazewell County High Intensity Drug Task Force, was indicted in 2018 for soliciting sex from confidential informants. He was found guilty at a federal trial in March.
