The House backed a Democratic balanced budget plan 249-180 to raise the debt limit above 2 trillion, while approving a short-term measure to extend borrowing authority through Wednesday. Senate consideration followed, with 51-22 vote on an amended version, yet final action stalled as House adjourned.
Elaine Thompson reports Bland County residents responded to a 1984 Supreme Court ruling by organizing the county’s first chartered Jaycees club. The Bland Jaycees Chapter now includes about 75 percent women, becoming the state’s first new chapter to practice unisex membership. The change followed the National Jaycees Chapter decision removing gender exclusion from membership.
Douglas F. Crickmer, 65, a former Pocahontas Land Corp. vice president and longtime coal official, died early Saturday in a Roanoke hospital. A McAlpin native and VPI mining graduate, he advanced from mine inspector to executive over 37 years, later serving as industry consultant and active in mining societies. He chaired Pocahontas Coalfield Centennial in 1983 and contributed to mining education and international conferences.
