Bernt Balchen was chosen to pilot the Dawn for the next Atlantic crossing attempt, announced by Mrs Frances W Grayson the Dawn’s fall owner. The selection follows test flights and prior pilots Wilmer Stultz and Chamberlin reassessed.
Fires in Pittsburgh's West End damaged a two story brick building injuring seven men. A spark ignited a 200 gallon tank of naphtha and rubber cement on the second floor. Firefighter injuries came from flying glass. Harry Cargoof Hallock Glove Manufacturing suffered fractures leaping from the second story.
Kansas City today authorities sought Gor man Raney 25 former secretary treasurer of the Continental Savings and Loan association in connection with alleged check forgeries totaling 5500.
Indianapolis faces a city manager government after the resignation of Mayor John J. Duvall following his corruption conviction. The City Manager League will present three business leaders for the council to choose from to fill the unexpired term. The league plans to meet with a civic organization to help in the selection process.

Keyser, Nov 1. A jury in the circuit court found C. B. Bryant, 49, mine superintendent of Emerville, not guilty of murder in the death of Carlos Nick Jenkins, 19, shot at Bryant's home on September 17. The defense argued self defense after Jenkins allegedly threatened Bryant on several occasions.
Ida Williams 42 of Jeannette is jailed on murder charges after she called a justice of the peace to say she shot her husband John Williams in self defense. Police found him dead on the floor. she sat nearby claiming he threatened her after returning home intoxicated.
Miss Bernice Lowen of Chicago opens Bluefield's second cooking demonstration under the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Sunset News. The free electric cooking school with Appalachian Electric Power company cooperation runs 2 to 4 daily through Thursday with prizes on the final day, including a Sellers kitchen cabinet and a Hotpoint vacuum.
In Seattle a Japanese fishing smack named Ryo Yei Maru was found derelict near Port Townsend with seven or eight crewmen eaten by starvation. Two survivors reported the ship carried letters and receipts all bearing Tokizo Miki, possibly its captain or owner, dated 1926 or earlier. Captain Payne of the Margaret Dollar estimated the crew had died months before, with the vessel adrift for a long period in a storm or calm.

In Central City Kentucky an engine explosion in a stalled automobile killed three people and wounded four others. Witnesses say F C Wells halted to help Mrs Porter as the hood was raised. Wells and William Lewis aged 16 died instantly from shell fragments. Carson Porter aged 7 suffered injuries, and two younger children were among the injured.
Thomas A Edison says in an interview for Popular Science Monthly that he studies rubber production for emergency war use. He warns Europe will ally against the United States and cut off rubber supply, with Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone aiding his research.

Canton nationalist leaders adopt a resolution for a true nationalist government under civilian control as General Chiang Kai Shek, back in harness after the split, is reported to command military forces of the new government. Tokyo reports Chiang may assume leadership of the armed side while seeking Japanese aid and a return of former Russian advisers.
