Uniform federal sentencing guidelines take effect today

Washington AP reports that a new uniform system of sentencing goes into effect in U.S. district courts despite objections from some judges and lawyers. Drafted by the U.S. Sentencing Commission and required by the 1984 anti crime law, the guidelines aim to bring consistency to federal sentencing.
