El-Tech Research Corp chief Eric Cummings said plans for a January plant opening in Princeton are advancing. He noted a more than $2 million TEDDI loan commitment secured from State Treasurer A James Manchin and bank financing nearing completion.
Britain and Syria sever diplomatic relations after Britain accuses Syria of complicity in a plot to blow up an Israeli jet. A study by Sheshinoff Rating Services ranks West Virginia among the top five states for declines in non performing loans. WV banks reported 2.2 percent bad loans, below the national 2.87 percent average, with a 2.8 percent drop from December 1985 to June 1986. Bank executives cite conservative lending and prudent borrower judgment amid layoffs and strikes.
On day one of a labor strike between General Telephone Co and CWA Local 2276 negotiators failed to agree on first proposals. GTE says wage talks will wait while job classification changes and out of district lunch pay are settled. CWA chief cites company proposals as the sticking point.
Lockheed and Northrop selected to design prototypes of the advanced tactical fighter to compete for a 750 aircraft contract valued at 40 to 50 billion dollars. Lockheed leads with Boeing and General Dynamics. Northrop with McDonnell Douglas. General Dynamics wins 633 million to modify 270 F 16As for homeland defense.
The government cut the minimum guaranteed savings bond rate from 7.5 to 6 percent effective today, prompting a Friday buying spree as small savers rush to banks for the higher yield before the cutoff. Banks report widespread demand and large denominations, while advisers say the bonds remain sensible for tax advantages.
