Tappahannock Couple Charged With Tax Case Bribery Plot
In Richmond Virginia on October 31 1951 federal charges allege Charles Evans Hughes of Providence Forge conspired to bribe Assistant U S District Attorney Richard R Ryder to influence the prosecution of a tax evasion case involving Hughes and the Brooks couple of Tappahannock. The FBI says a $6000 bribe was planned with a $265 cash delivery and a check for $6000. Bond set at $20000 each and a grand jury recalled to consider the bribery charges.
