In Chicago on May 26, a street car wreck involving a gasoline truck killed 33 as rear doors jammed and passengers crowded toward exits. Conductor William Lindell testified at a CTA hearing, recounting panic as flames swept the car and bystanders tried to aid those trapped.
In Washington on May 26 senators argued whether a basing point pricing bill approved by the house would aid or harm small business. Senator O Mahoney urged it would stimulate a free competitive economy while Senator Humphrey warned it could let big firms crush small businesses through price discrimination. The measure, shaped by a conference committee, would let individual merchants set uniform delivered prices including freight regardless of antitrust laws. The chamber was nearly empty as they debated and a vote was expected next week.
The Bluefield Swim Club and the Bluefield Garden Club clash over a city site east of Municipal Stadium once granted to the pool group for a swimming facility. Directors will decide next week which group holds rights to the land now sought for a community center.
George Holderby of Huntington plans a nonstop 160 mile swim to Cincinnati with James D. Nabb of Massillon joining him at Huntington. They travel with two boats, aided by Army engineers, hoping to reach Cincinnati around 7 p.m. Sunday after leaving Huntington at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Holderby has not trained recently and might attempt to beat the Mississippi freshwater record if energized.
In Los Angeles on May 26 a 14 year old, Harry Kinka, brewed a new formula named armula in his basement lab. He carried a corked bottle to school in his pocket and was burned when it ignited in his trousers. Doctors treated burns as his mother recalled past chlorine gas incidents and a previous swallow.
Australian authorities announce that all British Commonwealth occupation troops, about 2500 personnel from Australia, will withdraw from Japan over at least six months. U S troops will remain the sole occupation force. peak strength reached 40,000 including UK New Zealand and Indian units.
The U.S. government case in the 1945 Amerasia affair was damaged by raids that cracked the prosecution. Robert M. Hitchcock said the government was lucky to obtain fines against two defendants after evidence seized without warrants by FBI agents and the wartime OSS.
Elwood Grissell, Moundsville funeral director, was elected president of West Virginia Elks at the annual convention. Cody Fletcher of Princeton moves to a five year trustee term. UN Secretary General Trygve Lie warned the China crisis must be settled by July with a yearlong push to end the cold war. He noted a continued Soviet bloc walkout and said a September UN meeting could descend into confusion if unresolved. Lie planned talks with Truman and Acheson and described his Washington trip as exploratory with no new proposals. The status of Formosa and the Nationalist government was not seen as altering his settlement moves.
The CIOs International Union of Electrical Workers won the right to speak for 53,970 GE workers in 49 units, while the United Electrical Workers gained 36,686 workers in 40 units. Some 2,840 voted for smaller unions and 1,465 for no union. The outcome may shift with challenged ballots and inconclusive results in 16 units.
Ernest O Saunders retires after a 62 year teaching span begun in 1888. He dismisses his class at Kingsbury near Hemlock and will turn 82 on June 19 after teaching in Ohio West Virginia and Kentucky.
U N secretary general Trygve Lie says Joseph Stalin at 70 is sharp in his eyes and as healthy as four years ago. Lie recounts his Europe tour and notes Moscow life, buses and traffic, and describes meeting Stalin during a one and a half hour discussion. He insists rumors of ill health are unfounded.
The Federal Reserve Board reports April output at 189 percent of the 1935-39 average, two points above March and ten above April 1949. May hints at a further rise to 191, near the 195 peak, driven by iron and steel, autos, machinery, and mining rebound.

Allied armor guards western borders while 200,000 Communist led youths gather for a Whitsuntide march. Western commanders expect no big violence as propaganda volleys fly and Soviet eastern units report deserters.
In Memphis on May 26 a 31-year-old housewife, Mrs. Wilson Giles, described how 67-year-old night watchman R Preston Smith opened fire killing her husband Giles, then shot her before dying by his own hand. Police and inspectors noted the two men had been friends for 15 years and offered no clear motive.
A 14-year-old wife, Mrs Allie Martin, gave birth to twin girls in Rockford Illinois. One baby died shortly after birth. The mother and her husband Junior Martin 20 came from Missouri. Infant weights were about four pounds each. Martin works as a one dollar an hour mail order worker at a seed company.
The 23 year old national spelling bee ends in a two way tie as judges run out of jawbreaker words. Colquitt Dean of College Park Georgia and Diana Reynard of Kirk iumiaw high DEWaet Mavaland ed JULIIUE ARE share first place with 48 and 49 correctly spelled words respectively. Jim Bernard of Lanier junior high Houston finishes runner up with 300 prize. Nancy Mac Laren wins 100 for her effort with a missed word.
