Senate approves Revised MX Missile Program in Senate vote

The Republican led Senate approved Reagan's plan to store 100 MX missiles in existing underground silos in Nebraska and Wyoming by a 59 to 39 margin, freeing 625 million for development and flight testing. Democrats split, with 12 joining Republicans in backing, marking a reversal from last December when spending was blocked.

House and Senate Clash Over State Jobs Financing

West Virginia legislators split on funding a six month state jobs program. The House backed pay-as-you-go while the Senate favored borrowing 25 million from the Investments Board to finance most of the 47 million program. Gov. Rockefeller supports borrowing with federal funds covering the rest. The House passed eight bills for the program with votes mostly near unanimous.

Pershing 2 Production Approved and Capitol Wall Rejected

The House approved continued Pershing 2 missile production for Western Europe with $453.6 million and rejected a new exterior wall for the Capitol. The $4.8 billion appropriations bill funds the rest of fiscal 1983, including $3 billion in required spending and $1 billion for food stamps. The Pershing missile is slated for deployment in West Germany in December.

Mississippi River Flood Crest Douses Jackson and Statewide Evacuations

The muddy Pearl River crested 11 percent above its banks in Jackson, Mississippi, as about 10 000 residents evacuated for four days of flooding across the state. Officials warn it may be days before they can return home while health and safety risks from floodwaters loom. In the Rockies spring thaw causes mudslides closing highways and flooding parts of Utah and Colorado, and a Utah town held a sandbag party to prepare for more floods as a million acres of Mississippi farmland remain inundated.

Syrians Fire Missiles At Israeli Warplanes Near Lebanon

Syrian warplanes fired on Israeli jets over eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley amid rising Israeli Syrian tensions along a 50 mile cease-fire line. Israel denied crashing a drone or suffering hits, while reports of a grounded mobilization were not observed. No ground clashes were reported.
