Associated Press report from Columbus dated May 23 details a Presbyterian general assembly committee finding the church must uphold its teachings to influence civil laws and curb divorce and remarriage. It warns silence or approval undermines reform and notes slow progress with promise of further action.
Presbytery authorities are enjoined to uphold church standards, discipline ministers under care, and urge clergy to avoid sanctioning members who join another church. A speaker cited President Corey of the United States Stees Corporation marriage, urging the church to cleanse itself from lax divorces and sinful marriages.
Chicago May 23 Figures from the director of maintenance and operation show that safety appliance expenditures by the Union and Southern Pacific systems total nearly 12 million dollars. Southern Pacific spent over 3.5 million on block and distant signals and almost 4 million on safety devices on trains. The aggregate safety outlays cover block signals brakes and high speed attachments and include Union Pacific roadway devices and equipment appliances. Oregon lines account for about 1.1 million and total safety outlays across all lines reach about 11.84 million, including labor cost, indicating rail safety comes high in price.
The note reports a two week old black Berkshire pig with six white points stolen from Maple Shade farm on Sunday morning. A liberal reward is offered for the pig’s return and thief’s apprehension. The Atlantic Trust and Deposit Company plans a Jamestown Exposition branch on Manufactures and Liberal Arts grounds to serve concessionaires and visitors. Five hundred feet of floor space near the southern entrance will host banking services including cashing drafts and accounts, with Harry P. Webster as manager and a new identification card system for signature verification. The branch will offer all around banking except discounting, and aims to open by early next week.

The case seeks an accounting of Eddy property from Calvin A Frye and others under Mrs. Eddy’s trust deed which authorizes trustees to manage her assets.

Lake Mohonk New York May 23 session of the international arbitration conference focused on methods to propagate peace teaching in public schools and colleges. Commissioner Brown urged annually commemorating the opening of the first Hague peace conference in public schools.

He addresses tariff revision rumors and asserts the Republican pledge to uphold past stances remains intact. He cites the last campaign slogan Let well enough alone as evidence of consistency.
Chicago dispatch reports a Chicago St Louis train escaped wreck by a railway agent who flagged the train as flooding loosened rails. Lamont Illinois endured over a foot of water in streets for hours while two storage buildings collapsed and several shanties washed away.

An address before the Missouri Bankers' committee praised the Aldrich law but urged more reforms. The speaker proposed allowing national banks to issue 50 percent of circulating notes backed by securities other than U S bonds, retired in four to eight months from September. He credited Cortelyou for government deposits during a financial crisis and praised the U S system compared with foreign models.

In Johannesburg on May 23, white workers across forty three mines went on strike after owners demanded three drills a day. Strikers from Msta in the Central Rand joined, barricades were torn at Ferreira deep mine, and a general riot followed. About a thousand imperial troops arrived.
