Saltmarsh sparrow faces possible extinction path says scientists
PORTLAND Maine AP scientists warn the saltmarsh sparrow may vanish from the East Coast within about 50 years. Tracking by a university consortium shows eight of ten have disappeared in 15 years as coastal development and sea level rise shrink tidal marsh habitat. The birds number in tens of thousands overall with steep New England declines. The study seeks data for possible U S protection decisions.
