Five persons killed when a hog truck slammed into a tar truck and a car stopped on Highway 10 near Smithfield Isle of Wight County. Rescue crews worked to recover bodies amid flames as tar crews queued traffic.
Bluefield State College honors its athletic teams with a 6 30 p m banquet in the college dining hall. Guest speaker is J H Jimmy Rowland a Beckley attorney and West Virginia Board of Education member. Rowland coached Bluefield for over a decade and led teams to top national victories.
Rocky Marciano, after a disputed win over Don Cockell in San Francisco, suggested he may retire after a September bout. He defended his style against charges of roughness and explained he fights to maintain his undefeated reputation.
Charleston May 18 Fisherman Lewis Ross of Boomer Fayette County reported an unusual catch during the early fishing season. While returning for his hat at Seneca Lake he found his line taut and reel spinning as a young chipmunk was reeled in from the lake shore area near his cabin.
Barbara Romack, 22, from Sacramento, reaches the final round of the British women's championship in Portrush after a 2-up semifinal win over Scotland's Jeanette Robertson. She will face fellow Scottish internationalist Mrs. George Valentine in the 36-hole final.
The Pittsburgh Annual Conference opened a five day session and studied merging with the Erie Conference. Final action is planned next year. Pittsburgh covers 163000 Methodists in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia panhandle. Erie has 78000 in northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York. The body also recommended a seventh Episcopal area be formed in the northeastern jurisdiction from West Virginia to Maine. Routine reports were received. The conference ends Sunday with assignments for the new conference year.
President Eisenhower directed full cooperation of all federal agencies for civil defense exercises scheduled across the United States on June 15 and 16. Some top government officials will report to dispersal posts away from their offices for emergencies, with the President participating though a final dispersal post location was not yet decided.
A group of 75 Cub Scouts toured Byer Memorial Hospital in Ypsilanti Michigan on May 18. Bennie Snidecor, who announced he was born there, recalled the delivery room and asked nurse Mrs. Harry Gilmore if the scouts had seen that part before. The anecdote highlights Bennie’s memorable return visit.
John Henry Crabtree 30 an unemployed truck driver was found burned to death in a small building used as a bedroom one and a half miles south of Huntington on U S 52. Deputy Fire Chief Galway Woods said he apparently fell asleep with a cigarette. Family members in a nearby house noticed the fire after it got out of control.
The House approved giving State Department security officers the right to carry pistols for protection of the secretary of state, foreign officials, and others. The bill moves to the Senate for consideration.
The AFL Heavy Construction Council announced a new contract with the Constructors Assn of Western Pennsylvania. It covers about 20,000 workers in 33 counties with hourly pay hikes of five to ten cents. Old wage scales were not disclosed.
The Communications Commission received an application from Williamson Broadcasting Corp Welch West Virginia for a new radio station on 1340 kilocycles 100 watts unlimited time.

The Rev. Daniel B. Christian 71 of Abbs Valley Virginia will be buried at Grassy Spur Cemetery Bishop after funeral services at 2 30 p m from his home officiated by the Rev R T Riley assisted by the Rev William Hawkins He died Tuesday night after a prolonged illness Surviving are his wife two sons Jess of Boissevain and Herman of Abbs Valley two sisters Mrs Joe Beavers Cedar Bluff and Mrs Hamilton Sparks Richlands and ten grandchildren The body will be moved to the residence at 4 p m today from Pocahontas Union Funeral Home
Funeral services for 82 year old Mrs Victoria Thomas of Green Valley were scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. at her daughter Mrs John D Kuliks home with Rev Howard Jenkins officiating. Interment followed at Monte Vista Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons and granddaughters served as flower bearers. The body was moved to the Kuliks home today at 11 a.m. from Craven Funeral Home Montcalm. She was born April 20 1873 in Smyth County Virginia to Mary Kitten and W M Rigesby. Survivors include five children Marion Edwards Tazewell VA Fulton Edwards Gap Mill Mike Shoda Keystone Mrs John D Kulick Maple Akers and Mrs A W Hannell Prince George VA. Also two sisters Mrs Alice Davis Indiana and Mrs Nannie Shamshew Bluefield. She is survived by 20 grandchildren 24 great grandchildren and eight step-children.
Funeral services for Harry J. Capehart will be held today at 1 p.m. at Virginia Street Methodist Church in Welch with Rev. H. P. Boyd officiating. Burial follows in Oak Grove Cemetery at Bluewell. He died Sunday at Mary's Hospital in Bluefield.
John Granville W. Johnson of Wytheville Virginia died Monday at his home. The Rev J W Carpenter will conduct the service at Main Street AME Church Wytheville with burial at Crockett Cove Cemetery.
The funeral will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Lagos Funeral Chapel for Charlie Baily 50 of Bluefield. Burial follows in Oak Grove Cemetery. Born January 4 1905 in Macon Georgia he was a retired N or W Railway laborer with 30 years service and lived in Bluefield 40 years. Surviving are two daughters Geneva Hairston and Mee Baily of Charleston a son Charles Jr of Roanoke Virginia and brother Jerry Pine of Bluefield. Pallbearers listed with cars to be at 143 Nash Street at 1 30 p.m.
Marion Fairmont May 18 A special Marion County grand jury recessed indefinitely after hearing 11 more witnesses for a five day total of 70. The panel investigates laxities in law enforcement and irregularities in the May 10 municipal primary. Foreman Russell Nichols said transcripts will be studied and the prosecutor’s office will catch up on routine work. No resumption time set. jury may be recalled by Judge Charles E Miller. Six indictments were issued today, none tied to the probe.
Pittsburgh May 18 A fire broke out and destroyed one of two home wood barns of the Pittsburgh Rail Ways Co. C D Palmer president of the company estimated losses at 400000. No injuries. Fourteen trolleys inside damaged. Cause undetermined. Twenty five fire companies battled to prevent spread to a shed with inflammable oil naptha and octane.
In Huntington on May 18 union truck drivers refused to join Saturday Armed Forces Day parade with Yellow Cabs, which use four months of non union drivers. James Papas of Teamsters Local 505 denied official union orders for the boycott. A motorized convoy with simulated casualties was planned for Government Square.
Adlai Stevenson said Democrats will be a united party in 1956. He noted two years of efforts to secure unity and told reporters at Midway Airport he believes all good Democrats share the same aim. He spoke after returning to Chicago from a four week Africa business trip tied to his private law practice.
Allen and Wolfe of Marion Virginia and Donald W. Smith of Christiansburg Virginia were elected officers of the newly chartered Rho chapter of Sigma Mu Sigma at Virginia Tech. John W. Evans of Mullens is a charter member. VPI is the second Virginia college to charter the Masonic fraternity.
In Washington on May 18 the House Rules Committee raised why mechanized cavalry still drafts veterinarians after abandoning horses in World War I. Chairman Vinson of the Armed Services Committee answered Rep. Smith about veterinarians being used in meat inspection duties.
The fifth annual Woodland Equipment Show will be held at Camp Creek State Forest between Princeton and Beckley on May 20. Demonstrations include chain saws brush removal gear mechanical tree planters and a mini model sawmill. Prizes for spectators and contestants, plus educational exhibits, will be featured with lunch available.
London May 18 Russia, Britain, France, the United States and Canada adjourn two weeks from their U N sponsored disarmament talks begun February 25 as gaps narrow. The five nations form a subcommittee under the U N disarmament commission and plan to meet June first to assess progress. Ambassador James J. Wadsworth said gaps have been lessened and the group will resume work in New York.

A federal grand jury in Los Angeles cleared Welburn Mayock former general counsel of the Democratic National Committee in an income tax case The jury returned a no bill and declined to indict The complaint alleged Mayock and his wife evaded 25716 in taxes for 1948 Mayock a Washington and Los Angeles attorney appeared before the grand jury voluntarily.
Farmington West Virginia May 18 workers recovered the 13th body from the Jamison Coal and Coke Co mine where 15 men were entombed after the November 18 explosion. The victim Harry E Floyd a 63 year old pumper was found under a roof fall near the bottom of the man hoist shaft as crews resumed rescue efforts. The tipple and cleaning plant were back in operation and about 3000 tons of coal were loaded from silos since March 10 reopening.
In Indianapolis on May 18 a woman buying rose bushes asked a clerk the name of a bush. The clerk replied President Eisenhower. The woman hesitated then said she could not use that one as her friend is a Democrat.

West Liberty State College official Dr. Paul N. Elbin said six Bethany College freshmen were identified as the youths who caused a disturbance at the West Liberty dormitory early Tuesday. Bethany Dean Lester McAllister obtained confessions from the six, who were not named. Elbin called the incident a disturbance not a panty raid and said the students apologized to Dr. Elbin, making the matter closed.
ACF Industries will recall 400 500 workers next month to help fulfill a government order for 1 650 freight cars for railroads in India. The February 1 award valued the project at about 5 800 000 and was part of a package with two other orders to rehabilitate India's railway system.
