Washington May 18 A near complete survey shows 35 senate votes against the inflationary 2.2 billion Patman bonus bill, making a presidential veto likely to stand. Tens of thousands hold tickets amid arrivals from England US and Canada as crowd estimates exceed 650000. Monsignor Sennor and Father Guccione will take part in the papal procession.
Point Pleasant West Virginia voters elected a Democratic mayor James Couch and city clerk Charles Mees in the biennial election. Couch defeated Republican William Bardin 858 to 754 and will take office July 1. The ticket also secured at least four council seats as the Democratic slate won.
Charleston West Virginia May 18 The state police training camp at Point Pleasant expelled 30 of 155 recruits amid a probe into each man. Colonel P D Shingleton said ten others left voluntarily for other jobs. The camp now has 115 recruits with 50 more to be appointed July 1.
President Roosevelt weighs how big to set monthly pay envelopes for unemployed workers as work relief wages face opposition from organized labor. Hopkins plans state directors while approving $1.0917 billion in projects and smoothing agency procedures.
Police in Munich on May 18 seized all Catholic charity collections and forbade street rattling money boxes. Many collectors were arrested and priests molested as anti Catholic demonstrations occurred. Collectors were summoned to stations and cans confiscated. Clergy protested to the interior ministry.
May 18 Chicago dispatch reports emergency food orders rushed to about 15,000 destitute families as thousands more face empty cupboards. Relief official Charles H. Bond says funds come from rural rehabilitation and Cook County bond sales, but 640,000 residents may run out of food by next Tuesday. Despair grows as Illinois counties seek aid, protests erupt in East St. Louis and Belleville, and local charities and merchants step in with rations and soup kitchens.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace criticized certain groups for seeking an island refuge in America. He warned that due to weak foreign markets, production cuts may follow 1936 similar to 1934. He urged understanding world forces beyond any Washington party. He cautioned about lingering pioneer habits becoming barbarian later.
Chicago May 18. Bishops of the Methodist Episcopal church announce a three year evangelistic campaign to reunite three historic Methodists divisions lining up with the 200th anniversary of John Wesley. They aim for a United American Methodist church uniting the three bodies and 15 000 churches. Bishop Waldorf says the issue split era is past and unity would create the nation’s largest Protestant group. Twenty bishops attend the current conference.
Shepherdstown West Virginia May 18 Dr W H S White president of Shepherd State Teachers College announced Harold L Ickes secretary of the interior will be the principal speaker at the graduation exercises on June 6. One hundred eighteen seniors will receive diplomas at the ceremony the sixty second commencement of the school.
Washington reports Senator elect Holt of West Virginia, a Democrat, turns thirty soon as he prepares to take the oath. The Hatfield challenge to Holt’s eligibility based on age is before the senate elections committee, which may vote, hold a hearing, or seek a legal opinion on constitutional questions.
Stanley Hausner Polish American aviator was killed when his monoplane crashed during stunting at a memorial service for Josef Pilsudski in Detroit. The crash near Sweetest Heart of Mary church caused a house fire and drew a large crowd. Hausner, 36, had planned a Detroit to Warsaw flight and had strong Polish group support. He had previously survived a 1932 Atlantic rescue and was a naturalized citizen living in Newark.
Charleston May 18 Approximately two thousand miles of rural power line extensions for farmers and others appear feasible under FERA rules. C L Allen director of the works division said the rural electrification survey of over 10 thousand miles will be completed soon. Extensions vary from one mile to more than 20 miles and detail willingness to install wiring and buy appliances. After survey, cost estimates will be made and construction timing depends on plans in Washington.
Krakow, Poland, May 18. Joseph Pilsudski, liberator and dictator, was laid to rest in Wawel castle cathedral ending a crucial era in Polish history. The posthumous question of Poland's leadership looms as speculation swirls over his will and the role of President Ignacy Mościcki under a new constitution.
Arnold Barton aged 30, a structural iron worker, died after falling from scaffolding at a South Charleston chemical plant in Charleston West Virginia on May 18. Local authorities reported the accident as a workplace fatality.
Mrs. Roy Keyser, a Beckley social figure, was stabbed multiple times in the left arm and breast while returning from a women's club tea. Police say Paul W. Calloway, 25, of Beckley, assaulted her on a street, witnessed by James M. Hayes Jr., 16, who saw the attack and witnessing the stabbing and assault.
A Tri motor transport plane crashed during the Bishop airport dedication in Flint Michigan killing pilot Theodore Knowles of Detroit and two passengers Mrs Mary Rushlow and her son Conrad Rushlow with four others injured including Clement Rushlow and a three year old daughter. Army observers said the pilot tried to clear tents near Selfridge field ground crew and crash landed in a clear space.
Charleston. West Virginia relief chief William N. Beehler reports a 49 percent drop in April relief load due to improved employment conditions. He notes unemployed people prefer regular work and that the April load is 40 percent below April two years ago. the May 1 forward case load is 12.1 percent under January 1935.
Joseph J. Bruno former Schuylkill county detective was found guilty of second degree murder on three counts in the Kelayres massacre cases. The jury deliberated about 24 hours. sentencing deferred pending appeal. Bruno showed no emotion. his daughter fainted in court.
