In Lodz and Warsaw a string of attacks leaves fifteen dead and thirty injured as terrorists raid a railroad office and a spiking panic follows a Cossack patrol crackdown on Kutender’s spinning mills officials and workers.
A wagon passing Lonkowa street was suddenly attacked by terrorists who seized $1,000 from the wagon. A Cossack escort was killed and wounded as a patrol wagon arrived and fired, killing twenty-one and wounding forty-seven.
Philadelphia May 17 A conference of cotton manufacturers who attended the recent convention met to plan overcoming obstacles facing American cotton fabric exporters seeking foreign markets. James W. Duke of the National Export Association argued that expansion abroad is feasible and blamed lack of direct contact with European markets for current export troubles.
C. O Leary and Son Inc deny a report that the Hale property in the West End was sold. They confirm the engineer has submitted ground maps for approval and announce the plots will be placed on the market within the next sixty days.
Hon. Samuel B. Baker adjutant general of West Virginia died at his Clarksburg home after a short illness diagnosed as abscess of the lungs. He contracted heavy colds, exposed himself at the Jamestown exposition, and the shock of a railroad wreck near Ravenswood is linked to his death. Baker was a noted newspaper man and Republican leader, formerly business manager of the Parkersburg State Journal and later of the Clarksburg Telegram. He leaves a large family.
May 17 in Chicago saw the wheat pit surge with July September and December options above the dollar mark at close. July wheat ended at 1.00 1-4, September 1.01 1-4, December 1.02 1-4 while corn and oats also reached gains with May oats at 48 3-8 and July at 46 5-8.
Judge Woods ordered the Idaho County prosecutor to investigate how Harry Orchard was interviewed before the Haywood trial. Prosecutors cited possible jury influence from press reports and Governor Gooding. The trial faced delays as more witnesses arrive and questions about Orchard's immunity and background persist.

President and Mrs Roosevelt with Archie depart Washington for a brief vacation at Pine Knot near Charlottesville in Albemarle county Virginia. The party will travel by carriage and enjoy walks and drives with rest and reading time. Assistant Secretary Latta will set up headquarters in Charlottesville and maintain White House contact. Pine Knot and Charlottesville are linked by telephone.
Mayor Schmitz issued a statement asserting he has not resigned and has no intention to do so. He dismissed charges against fuel officials alleging a $200,000 trolley franchise payment and refuted Ruef’s bribery accusations, insisting Ruef’s claims are false. Ruef was further examined by the grand jury.
Tacoma notes President Roosevelt weighing a congressional commission to appraise railroad values nationwide. R S Grosseupo says the president favors granting railroads leeway for energy and enterprise. He cites Washington talks with Senator Daniel and others on government control as a major upcoming issue cutting across party lines.
Three men burned and forty two patients frightened as an explosion caused five thousand dollars in damage at the Ohio Valley Hospital in Pittsburg.
Ruth May five years old daughter of William Mey shot and killed her eight year old cousin Herman Selbee with a pistol found on a bed in an upstairs room. The accident occurred while children played. A notice announces a land sale by Mr C T Martin at Midway during the writer's absence. An advertisement line mentions wash suits and DeWitt's Little Early Risers.
May 17 report from Norfolk says after acquittal of W. J. Simmons a colored factory worker was arrested for refusing to surrender a reward. A package of seven letters mailed May 10 between Norfolk and Danville, tied by railway clerks and routed West Virginia, was found in waste paper and turned over to Simmons' counsel. Inspectors investigate.
Former President Grover Cleveland helps Benjamin Schwartz alias Benjamin J Meyer start over after serving two years in the western penitentiary for forgery. Schwartz, once an Albany state department employee, reached out after his imprisonment and received a generous check following Cleveland’s prompt outreach.
In Pittsburg, after an investigation of Schwartz's case, Mr. Cleveland sent a check. Schwartz said he planned to go to Boston, Massachusetts, to start life anew. The day of his discharge from prison he received the check and began his journey east.
Fifty Chicago girls aged between 10 and 15, daughters of union men, will march in the Moyer Haywood parade to show sympathy for W. D. Haywood’s 10 year old daughter on trial in Boise for Governor Steanenberg’s murder. No red flags or banners. Chief Shippy restricts anarchistic symbols. J Edward Morgan confirms wives sisters and sweethearts to line up. Woman's Trades Union League to lead the column.
New York report states Chapon Bardinitz an escaped Siberian exile hanged himself at 276 Cherry street. Seven countrymen, afraid to cut him down, watched as he slowly strangled. Bardinitz gave away his money before dying and Marcus Plaskevitz found the body two hours later.
Justice Dowl ing grants Mary Adelaide Mizner an interlocutory decree of divorce from Wilson Mizner on grounds of adultery. The decree allows Mrs Mizner to remarry.
Abraham Ruef testified before the grand jury about a Parkside Traction Company deal alleged to pay him 20000 dollars to secure a franchise. Prosecution claims 1000 dollars was to be paid to each of eighteen supervisors and 12000 to Ruef and Schmitz. Directors include W H Crocker Charles E Green G F E Umbren Douglas Wilson and others.
In New York on May 17 four hundred strike breakers quit work on White Star Line piers. The steamship company hired only crews for unloading and loading. A Brooklyn stevedore contractor made terms with the strikers. An accidental killing occurred when Harry Marshall was shot by a stray bullet from Benjamin Vincent, who had been attacked by strikers.
May 17 report from Evansville Indiana notes the second day of a street car strike ends with one man dead six injured and all street car traffic halted. Mayor Boehne calls a special meeting of the board of safety and orders 200 temporary policemen sworn in while seeking arbitration. The company refuses arbitration but the union agrees to the mayor's plan.
Toledo May 17 Chairman Brown head of the Ohio Republican state central committee declared unequivocally for Taft saying Ohio Republicans are solid for the Secretary of War. He denied any plan to eliminate Senator Foraker from politics and urged senators Dick and Foraker to clarify rumors of backing Fairbanks. The party machinery he said is with Taft and further opposition would be publicly noted.
A statement approved by Governor Harris Attorney General Ellis Secretary of State Thompson and Auditor Guilbert urges all Ohio Republicans to rally behind William H Taft for president. The question of a senate candidate should be settled later and any candidate deserves a fair hearing before the party and the people.
Two firemen were injured when a massive explosion followed a fire at the Brush and Stevens Company pattern and model plant in Pittsburg. Five manufacturing plants were destroyed and several small residences damaged. Dynamite and oil stored in the building raised the danger, with total loss estimated at $100,000.
In Cleveland on May 17 contractor Hollingsworth uncovered Erie railroad bonds totaling 116740 dollars and 575 in gold coins in the century old Ohio City Inn ruins. The bonds belonged to George C. Morgan who vanished in 1874. The contractor shared the gold with the property owner and Ira would receive the bonds if Morgan heirs are not found within five years.
Washington reports the Bureau of Statistics says current fiscal year export of canned beef will be only one fourth of last year. Ten months ending April show 895 017 pounds exported vs 4 121 000 pounds previous year. Greatest decline is with Great Britain.
