Friday authorities reported a methane gas explosion at a South African coal mine killed at least 49 miners and left four missing. The mine had been regarded as one of the country’s safest before the tragedy, officials said.
Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports city editor Jim Terry was moved from Princeton Community Hospital to North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after a Thursday night heart attack. He was revived after cardiac arrest and remains in critical condition. accompanied by his wife Patti.
On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. a hot dog and bean dinner at the old Falls Mills Elementary Volunteer Fire Department will cost 2.50 for adults and 1 for children with proceeds to a fund for fire department equipment. Sunday May 16 10 a.m. the Bland County 4-H Horse Show opens at the Bland County Fairgrounds. President Clinton stated that the threat of military force to halt the War in the former Yugoslavia remains on the table, though the U.S. will not act alone. He backed a dual approach of arming Bosnian Muslims and limited bombing, while a U.N. plan to station troops on the Bosnia-Serbia border was praised as a good next step.
West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton called lawmakers back to Charleston to act on a Medicaid bill amid a statewide televised address. He listed ten items on the special session agenda including a 1993-94 budget, but focused the speech on Medicaid, which finances care for more than 300,000 residents.
Bluefield State College and Concord College hold commencement today. Bluefield honors 600 plus graduates across two ceremonies, with associate degree Friday and baccalaureate today. Concord plans 210 spring graduates at Centennial Hall with multiple past and future cohorts invited and several speakers including Dr. Jerry Beasley and Dr. Vivian Crane.
The agenda includes enacting a 1993 94 state budget of 2.1 billion dollars and continuing rules for executive agencies. A rules bill died earlier, agencies may stall without rules by July 1. Proposals include 2 million for veterans bonuses and 8.5 million total cost for 22 629 eligible veterans. Also a 1 billion program for education, a 12 million tax increase on pity owners, 10 million emergency funding for Medicaid and family law master system, with a 77 million backlog to hospitals and doctors. The Supreme Court reportedly seeks 120 000 more for the law master program. Proposals repeal anti smoking laws and revise raffle board licensing while ensuring 6 percent tax applies at retail. Board of Investments costs cut by about 4 million. Funding for the special session proposed.
The governor's plan would be funded by 184 dollars in state funds plus a tax on doctors hospitals and other health care providers. The tax seeks to attract three dollars in federal matching funds for each state dollar. A current voluntary tax on medical providers expires July 1 for noncompliance with federal standards. Revenue from that tax funds Medicaid patient reimbursements. This year's Medicaid budget runs at 1.3 billion dollars.
Bluefield Virginia police report a 24 year old Bluefield man, Kevin David Holcomb of 111 Valleydale Street, died in a Route 720 crash Friday morning after a guardrail impact on the westbound 460 exit near Graham Middle School. Police say the car, a 1979 Toyota two door, likely flipped during the crash and Holcomb, reportedly not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and killed. He was pronounced dead at Tazewell Community Hospital. Officer Mike Arthur is investigating.
Bluefield Va. today hosts day two of the Spring Festival with activities in the municipal parking lot and Municipal Auditorium. In the parking lot an all day Appalachian Art Show auction flower mart and craft contests run with vendor sales. At the auditorium performances include Ashley and Allison Bowman and Vick Sorell at 10 30 a m Donna Moore with Bill Elliot at 3 15 p m and Danny and Debbie Grabeel with Susan Allen at 3 45 p m.
