May 14 reports James Kirkpatrick Henry Lowery and Lemuel Wyman escaped the county jail in a seven by fifteen inch hole after a prior inmate Edward sawed the door. Kirkpatrick, a noted saloon keeper, previously held up a Short Line train at Wallace. Lowery faced bribery charges to avoid prosecution for robbery. Wyman was described as a Salem talker.

The Telegraph records the death of William Munsey Shott at 26 after being struck by a light engine near the Graham area. He had worked as a press man in Bluefield, moved to Bristol briefly, and returned just days ago with survivors including his mother, siblings, and several relatives. His remains are to be taken to Staunton for interment. Peace to his ashes.
