The Beacon Trailer Park property in Bluefield has been sold following a signed agreement. Region B-1 Princeton City Manager Jim Juhl says he was not surprised when asked to resign.
Barbara Hawkins reports that Bluefield residents Karen Disibbio and John H. Shott won the two Mercer County Board of Education seats in a nine-candidate race. Disibbio led with 3,275 votes or 24.8 percent, Shott secured 2,543 votes or 19.3 percent, and Byrd won the remaining term. The winners take office July 1 for six-year terms.
Mercer County Board of Education members Karen Disibbio and John H. Shott, both new to office, vow to expand input from school personnel, parents, teachers, and the public before decisions affecting children. They emphasized listening to day-to-day concerns within the school system.
In Mercer County Democrats renominated incumbents amid light turnout of about 26 percent with 7,683 ballots cast of 28,950 registered. State Senator Fred Parker led Monroe and Raleigh results over Baylor. Del. Richard Flanigan led Mercer House race with 18.5 percent and 3,479 votes, followed by Gene Bailey Howard Wellman and James McNeely.
Democratic incumbents claim jobs and the economy as the primary issue as five Mercer County candidates win nominations for the November general election. Frederick L. Parker leads in the 10th Senatorial District with 3,024 votes to Richard Baylor's 1,922, touting jobs as the key goal. Voters also reendorsed Richard D. Governor Arch Moore announced a $1,000 raise for primary, secondary, and higher education teachers funded by a state self insurance plan for doctors and hospitals.
