Washington reports that Madrid quickly agreed to suspend death sentences for prisoners held by Weyler in Cuba. The move averts a potential US response and keeps diplomatic talks with Spain protracted, with Weyler's fate and Spain’s political calculus under scrutiny.
In Virginia State League action Petersburg beat Roanoke 14 to 7 while Norfolk fell 6 to 7 and Richmond won 8 to 7. National League scores included Cincinnati 4 Washington 6 and Chicago 5 Boston 2 with St. Louis 3 Baltimore 10.

The biennial meeting of the Supreme Senate of the Knights of the Ancient Essenic Order opened at Music Hall Louisville with hundreds of delegates. General Weatherby reported strong growth, especially in Louisiana and southern states, with large gains in the uniform rank. A love feast was held tonight and a parade of over two thousand uniform rank members is planned for tomorrow.
Fon du Lac Wisconsin May 12 Opening of the Grand Lodge session marks the twenty fifth anniversary of the Knights of Pythias in the state. Representatives from all subordinate lodges and a large uniform rank contingent attended. Officers report strong progress during the year.
The Young People's Missionary Society of Bland Street Church met on April 28 to elect officers for the year. Officers include Miss Hazel Prince president J D McCue first vice president Miss Bessie Douthat second vice president Miss Florence Hight treasurer Robert Repas recording secretary Miss Edna Walton corresponding secretary. The society organized a year ago and has 59 members with total contributions of 71.70 dollars. The article notes growth from 76 to 1 227 members in twenty nine thousand nine hundred eighty? members and discusses the broader spiritual benefit of mission work beyond finances, emphasizing Christian breadth, the centrality of Christ and the aim to make this year the best.
A large congregation witnessed the marriage of C. H. Evans and Kate Easley at 4 30 in the Baptist Church with Rev. W A Pearson officiating. The event featured floral decorations by the Xthenes society, Mendelssohn and Lohengrin hymns, and a large reception to the depot before the couple departed for Norfolk and Bluefield to begin married life.
Congressman Hartman of Montana circulates a House petition to the judiciary committee for an immediate report on the joint resolution to authorize reorganization of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company. Foreclosure sale is set for June. If Congress delays, a state charter may govern the company. The measure would force sale of agricultural lands within a mile of the track at up to 2.50 per acre and bar consolidation with rival lines.
The second nine traveled to Pearisburg yesterday to face the local club but rain ended play at the end of the second inning. Bluefield had 14 runs when called, Pearisburg had 2. Bluefield's lineup included Oakley Samuels Dickey Chandler Douthat Crockett Stack Williams and Cook. Bluefield and Roanoke clubs plan games Thursday Friday and Saturday with 3 30 p m starts and an expected high quality exhibition for all local baseball fans.
At St Joseph Missouri on May 12 the Republican State Convention was called to order by Chauncey I. Filley and voted unanimously for McKinley. Delegates at-large were Filley Kerens Warner and Niedringhaus. Business ran late. an open air parade and fireworks were planned for tonight.
A May 11 report from Bluefield W V claims a fight between colored men and Hungarians left two colored men and one Hungarian dead while Wilson Worthington and George Manard were wounded by stray shots. The piece argues such sensational reports are fabrications spread by the press.

Dover Delaware May 12 The Musk rat state added four delegates to the McKinley column but they go without instructions The primary campaign shifted from presidential issues to party control for the rest of the year.
Forecast for West Virginia and Southwest Virginia calls for cooler, possible rain today. A notice mentions a prize drawing at Pedigo's Racket Store where Carl Hale held Ticket 1401 and won a gold watch. Also noted is a Jersey bull exhibition at a farm south of the city and an ad for Catogni's crystalized fruits bonbons and candies.
Rev. Mr. Marshall traveled to Landgrant and D O Baldwin from Pocahontas visited. Capt W A O Conner plans a ten day family visit in Appomattox. New Yorkers H N Curtis and F E Randall are registered at the Inn. Various travelers from Wytheville Chicago and Lynchburg checked in at local hotels. Local notices mention plans to subscribe all paper carriers and a city ordinance about engine whistling.
