Today marks the final day of Bluefield’s city wide fund drive for a $60,000 swimming pool. Officials report about $15,000 raised so far, one quarter of the goal, with volunteers urging larger gifts. Bands from Beaver and Graham high schools will parades and perform downtown as merchants pledge 10 percent of Friday sales to the pool project.

Walter Joshua Taylor a longtime Mc Dowell county political figure died of a heart condition Monday at his niece’s home in Castlewood Virginia. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Fort Gibson Methodist church in Castlewood with Rev. Walter Mabe officiating. Interment followed at Temple Hill Cemetery with Castlewood Lodge No. 231 AF and AM in charge. Survived by widow Lula Adams three children Sarah Abshire Ninna Lester and Samuel A Taylor and a foster son Douglas Lee Harry Taylor. A child died in infancy.

In Welch West Virginia on May 11 a group of McDowell county deputies captured a 60 gallon capacity liquor still in Santytown Hollow between Premier and Roderfield. No arrests were made as the still was not operating. Investigators found two 60 gallon mash barrels 100 pounds of sugar and a sack of chops. a copper worm and oil drum type outfit indicating it had operated for some time.
