Mercer county election officials faced a slow early count as Democratic votes led turnout near sixty percent. Early tallies show Hoff and Neely leading for Senate and Bailey and Patteson atop gubernatorial Democratic races, with numerous other races unsettled at press time.
R B Ellison pleaded guilty to two terrorist whippings linked to the Ku Klux Klan in Atlanta. He admitted assault and battery for crimes against Roy C Berry and Roy Gravitt, receiving three years, the state law limit. Judge Bond Almand condemned it as men taking law into their own hands.
First unofficial returns show incumbents leading in West Virginia congressionals. Love leads in the first district, Hedrick tops Chenoweth in the sixth, Rohrbough over Garrett in the third, Ramsay ahead in the first Democratic race, Stagers leading in the second, and Bailey leads Wade in the Democratic third with precincts reported.
Democratic nominations show Wilson leading sheriff with 3201 votes from 30 precincts in McDowell County early morning figures. Richard Parsons leads for judge. Boreman and Patteson head governor and U S Senate races. Strong county returns show Pennybacker and Riley leading for supreme court, with mixed results across house of delegates.
Zee King Tao an 18 year old Shanghai youth will receive an American college education in memory of Mack Cook, paratrooper son of J B and Mrs Cook of Memphis. He will sail on General Meigs to enroll at Harding College under the Cooks sponsorship as an act of international goodwill. It took over a year to secure Zee's passport and arrangements.
Washington May 11 AP The railroad labor dispute remains unsettled despite trains running under government control. Union leaders met Army Secretary Royall who said he has no authority to negotiate yet will respond in a few days. Royall earlier said the army would not enter negotiations now. M W Clement of Pennsylvania Railroad predicted a settlement before May 19.
President Truman's orders keep trains moving as T Alan Goldsborough schedules a hearing on government seizure to end the strike. Union leaders Alvanley Johnston David Robertson and A J Glover face possible fines for defying the restraining order and canceling walkout plans hours before 6 am. Royall restructures rail control with seven regional army commanders while allowing carriers to handle finances.
The defense program gained speed as both houses approved a 70 group air force bill and a senate draft measure. The plan drafts men 19 to 25 for two years, registers 18 to 25, and reserves 260,000 18-year-olds. It aims a five year term boosting armed forces to about 2 million, with veterans exempt from induction but not registration. A southern bid to allow race based unit assignment failed.
Washington May 11 Amid global talk of a Soviet US peace conference President Truman issued a cautious statement avoiding commitment to direct talks. He said Ambassador Smith’s Moscow discussions with Molotov aimed to clear misimpressions about US policy and reiterated aid to western Europe and nonhostility toward Russia.
Spiller Hicks 65 former Bluefield resident died suddenly of a heart attack at his Richmond Virginia home while talking with his wife. A Provident Mutual Life Insurance agent since 1925 he had been active in civic service and American Legion roles in Bluefield. Surviving are his widow daughter granddaughter three sisters and a brother.
Washington May 11 A House committee on un American activities urged strict curbs on communists accusing them of plotting violent overthrow The 160 page report calls for vigorous enforcement of laws to quell subversive activity and new anti communist legislation It proposes annual registration of party members with the Justice Department criminal prosecutions for leaders who refuse to disavow overthrow moves and passport denial for party members
Sharp earthquakes rocked southern Peru and northern Chile early today, killing at least one person and injuring an undetermined number. Heavy damage to homes and buildings was reported in affected areas.
In unofficial returns from 265 of 2788 precincts, Democratic Senate hopeful Matthew M. Neely leads with 9583 over Rush D. Holt. Governor races see Okey L. Patteson leading with 8580 to James Kay Thomas 4245. Republican Boreman tops with 4636, Lawson second, and other totals listed.
West Virginia officials report unofficial returns from 2,788 precincts. Democratic and Republican ballots reveal leaders in statewide offices including secretary of state treasurer attorney general and agriculture commissioner. U S Senate and governor races highlight factional battles and early leads for Patteson Bevercom Neely and Boreman.
Several faint distress signals 100 miles southeast of Key West prompted a search by more than twenty rescue planes for a missing naval flying boat. One Fifth Air Rescue Squadron plane picked up weak signals and tried to close in, but rainstorms hampered efforts.
Detroit May 11 negotiators admitted failure to avert a strike by about 75,000 Chrysler Corp employees set to begin at 10 a m. EDT. CIO United Auto Workers announced a walkout in 16 plants across three states after talks broke down over a proposed pay increase from 30 to 17 cents per hour.
