Wal ter Mackey Scott 50 secretary of Falling Rock Campbell Coal company died at his Elkview home after heart disease. He formerly lived in Columbus Ohio and is survived by his widow and one daughter.
Rotarians from West Virginia gather in Bluefield for the seventeenth annual convention with Dr Gus Dyer of Vanderbilt delivering the keynote address at the West Virginian ball room banquet. Officers will be elected and reports from district leaders anticipate over 700 attendees.
Roby Worley 33 and Charles Palmer 35, both Coalwood residents, died and were injured respectively when their car left the highway on Premier mountain at about 6 45 pm last evening. Worley died on arrival at Stevens clinic Welch. Palmer expected to recover from injuries.
Charleston West Virginia May 11 A ruling by Attorney General Homer A Holt holds the 3 fee in criminal cases for justices of the peace should be paid only in cases prosecuted on the merits. The opinion says the fee covers all official services and differs from fees for separate steps and acts.
Charleston West Virginia May 11 a major road-building program may begin this year with nearly 3 5 million dollars in funding. Mortimer W Smith chief engineer of the state road commission said 23 highway projects totaling about 1 420 500 will be ready for contract awards soon. Plans for 29 additional projects costing about 1 400 000 and 11 bridges costing 445 000 are being completed and should be ready for award by August 1 1935.
George Ward state banking commissioner outlined plans to reorganize banks now operating restrictedly. The plan includes selling 75,000 in debentures to the RFC and launching 55 a share assessments on stockholders. It also provides 30 percent immediate availability of restricted deposits and relief from 70 percent remaining claims.
Washington May 11 The board of tax appeals was petitioned for redetermination of a 1932 tax claim of 11299 by Edward Stifel and Mrs Emily V Stifel of Wheeling West Virginia The petitioners charged the bureau of internal revenue erred in disallowing a deduction from taxable income of 148255 as a bad debt The loss was the unpaid balance of a 250000 loan to Baird Mitchell
Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia who created Mother’s Day recounts the roots of the observance. The day began in 1906 with a formal Philadelphia celebration and gained state and national recognition in 1913 and 1914 respectively.
Miss Anna Jarvis describes her mother Mrs. Anna M. Jarvis as the force behind the Mother's Day idea. She recalls Civil War era aid, church leadership, and open doors for orphans. Proclaims a 1908 citywide Mother's Day, notes carnations as the symbol, and urges cards or visits as gifts.
