Welch Community Hospital Survives Floods and Stands Strong
Welch Community Hospital kept serving the region despite flood waters surrounding the facility. CEO Walter Garrett praised staff dedication, noting a nurse worked 36 straight hours while the building, built in 1984 after the 1977 flood, with large basement vents, suffered minimal damage apart from 22 destroyed vehicles. Communications were hardest, with phones down until cell service emerged, and Ambulance service space was repurposed inside the hospital. The hospital coordinated with emergency services to pool resources and avoid driving patients until roads improved.

Bluefield to enforce city code on illegal signs
Bluefield officials will enforce city code on signs posted around town including entertainment signs on utility poles and oversized political signs. The city requires signs to be maintained and removed within 30 days of notification, and campaign signs must be 24 by 24 inches and removed within 10 days after the election. American Electric Power warned that attaching signs to utility poles is illegal and a hazard to line mechanics.
