Presidents Bush and rival Bill Clinton visited riot-hit Los Angeles areas this week and condemned the violence while urging stronger government aid for inner cities.
Munchkin Betty Tanner and seven fellow original cast members toured Liberal for the third annual Oz Fest celebrating Kansas ties to The Wizard of Oz. Dana Linda Windler built the displays including Dorothy's Farm House ruby slippers while actors like Lewis Croft shared memories and friendships formed in Liberal.
West Virginia voters face one of the state's longest ballots with national state and local candidates on the slate. Mercer County includes redistricting changes prompting multiple ballot sets and lengthy tabulation, while weather and turnout affect campaigning ahead of primary elections.
300 students received BSC diplomas at the 95th annual Bluefield State College commencement held Saturday in the Ned E. Shott Physical Education Building. Former West Virginia Governor Cecil H. Underwood delivered the keynote address urging graduates to apply knowledge to societal use and highlighting BSC’s advances in computer technology and libraries for Southern West Virginia.
Chemistry Professor Isaac A. Robinson Jr. won the Bluefield State College Foundation Teaching Award for his 34 years at BSC. He began teaching in 1958 and was honored for teaching excellence, service to the college and region, professional contributions to academic development, and personal professional growth during commencement exercises.
In the 1992 primary race three candidates submitted campaign finance reports by the May 5 deadline. Dr William B Harden led in receipts and spending with 1232.85 received and 1191.87 spent, Pamela D Martin raised 758150 and spent 562.50, Beverly James Maxwell filed only the 5 filing fee. Harden reported numerous individual contributions and in kind items and list of expenditures to TeleScripps Cable Co Trading Journal First National Bank WKMY WVVA TV The Observer Scripps Howard Foto 1 Mercer County Board of Education Graphic Masters Inc. Martin reported contributions from several backers and expenses including Trading Journal Postmaster and Telecable Targeting.
Dr E Bruce Heilman calls Bluefield College’s 75th Anniversary gathering the most important in school history. The campaign aims to raise 7.5 million dollars for a science center dormitory Easley Library additions Lansdell Shott Halls renovations and Mercer-Tazewell Phase seeks 2 to 2.5 million in support. Heilman urges area to spread the mission and invites cash deferred or matching gifts and pledges.
