Confusion rose as the government reversed course and urged postponing mass inoculations of Salk vaccine. Surgeon General Scheele’s earlier push to inoculate first and second graders was halted pending a Sunday statement from the Public Health Service.
At least 11 West Virginians died in violent or accidental incidents across the state. A fatal traffic crash near Sissonville killed Albert Russell Young and Roy White as a car struck a truck and a porch, while Betty Way and relatives were injured. A Raleigh County shooting left Dolph Williamson dead when William Jones opened fire amid a drainage dispute. Other deaths included a car plunge near Gary, a child hit by a car near Chelyan, a drowning in Tug Fork, and a burn-related death from a torch explosion at a Clarksburg business.
The West Virginia Education Association delegates call for a 20 percent minimum salary increase for college faculty and urge state funding to raise teacher pay. Taiphi Formosa May 7 Two top US military leaders Alfred M Pride and William C Chase spent six hours on Quemoy inspecting island defenses. They met Gen Liu Yu Chang commander of about 30 000 troops on the 50 square mile island near Amoy. The visit followed heavy artillery shelling by Red China days earlier.
In Paris Dulles and Adenauer held a 65 minute session at the U.S. Embassy amid Big Four talks. They discussed Western strategy, East-West issues, and the Austrian treaty impact on Germany, signaling a shift toward integrating West Germany into NATO.
The Census Bureau said the US population will reach about 164.87 million on May 8 and top 165 million by month end, reflecting roughly 25 million growth since Victory Day in May 1945. The estimate notes gains from overseas forces and postwar demographic expansion.
