Republicans accuse President Truman of resisting anti Communist moves and failing to curb inflation and farm price declines. They label his trip a socialist push and demand honest probes into crime syndicates and racketeering while criticizing foreign aid and nationalization plans.
Huntington West Virginia May 6 15th annual high school band festival concludes with Magnolia taking first place for the first time in 15 years Nassau. Sixty four bands parade through crowded streets to Fairfield Stadium where a 15 000 crowd fills the venue. The two and a half hour parade features bands from Barboursville Wirt Milton St Marys Bluefield Morgantown Logan Elkins Romney New Cumberland Weirton and Warwood. Rains threaten but cooler 70s follow a 95 degree day as Majorettes in kilts lead the bands through the route.
President Truman signed a bill creating the Uniform Military Code to replace separate army navy and air force legal systems. Enlisted men may demand enlisted members on trials, and an civilian three judge appeals court will review severe penalties. Effective May 31, 1941 to allow study by services.
The 77-year-old president of Nicaragua died at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia at 10 25 p m Eastern daylight saving time after cancer treatment. He had undergone surgery April 3 for a cancerous stomach ulcer and had shown improvement before a rapid decline. He had served as foreign minister and later as consul in San Francisco and held various roles including minister of hygiene and senator.
A 1941 Piper cruiser crashed at the U S routes 19 and 460 intersection near Richlands. Pilot Harry Lumsden and passengers Jack C. Howard 20 and Sgt Eugene O Vance 21 were treated for burns and injuries after being removed from the wreckage. The plane owned by Clinch Valley Airways had taken off from Richlands airport on a pleasure flight.
Duncannon Pa May 6 a quick-thinking trainman saved the Broadway Limited from a major disaster. An eastbound freight jumped its tracks 18 miles west of Harrisburg and engineer B H Coyle used an inter-train phone to warn the Limited coming on an adjacent track. The Limited braked and avoided a derailment with only minor damage and seven injuries to crew.
Springfield Ohio May 6 John L Lohnes of the Oliver corporation chased a lumber car raccoon that burst from a southern car into a shed. He treated a lacerated hand and quipped that southern raccoons read differently.
The National Labor Relations Board ruled unanimously that employers must provide unions with payroll data including names, positions, and wage rates for current and past year, covering all employees in the bargaining unit. The decision covers non members in the unit and extends to merit pay data when requested. The case stems from AFL-CIO Local 34 of Rochester against Yawman and Erbe Manufacturing amid a 1948 bargaining dispute.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson departed for Europe with a grim warning that the free world faces crucial tests ahead due to international communism. He pressed for rapid mobilization of moral and material strength and outlined hopes for a new sense of Atlantic community through talks with Bevin Schuman and NATO officials.
Clarksburg May 6 The West Virginia Education Association proposes a three cent per pack rise in the penny a pack cigarette tax. The 200 member delegation backed the plan noting current revenue sources are sensitive to business conditions. The group projects $6 million more annually with the increase and cites existing taxes on gross sales and consumer retail as tied to business volume. H Rodgers McVey of Alderson was elected president without opposition.
Actress Elizabeth Taylor married hotel heir Conrad Hilton Jr at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills in a 22 minute ceremony. The couple posed for photos, then left amid cheers from fans while police kept the crowd at bay.
Georges Kaminker of the French government at the United Nations will headline a three day West Virginia Rotary district conference in Bluefield. The event, chaired by J Lawrence Alexander, features Kaminker Friday at 10 45 am at Granada theater with other high profile Rotary speakers and a lunch hosted by Princeton and Bluefield clubs. Registration opens Thursday as about 500 WV club members attend events at the West Virginian hotel and Granada theater.
Senator McCarthy accuses the Truman administration of deceit in releasing 81 state department loyalty files and calls the charges phony. Morgan Myers counters that McCarthy has produced no solid evidence and only new allegations. Contempt citations for Browder and Field are prepared as Remington faces questions from the House committee.

United Auto Workers members secure approval for the Chrysler contract ending a 100 day strike. Early returns show strong ratification across 27 halls as 89,000 workers prepare to return to plants Monday. The deal includes $100 monthly pensions and enhanced benefits.
The corneas of Maurice Bey, executed as a member of a wartime espionage group, were transplanted today into a blind Parisian. Officials will judge the operation's success in two weeks and refused to name the patient or share details. Bey requested execution by heart shot to preserve his eyesight.
In Marshalltown Iowa on May 6 a doctor’s hat vanished when wind carried it to a four story office roof. The hat was returned yesterday as the wind blew it back to Dr. R. C. Carpenter who was walking by.
