Jameston West Virginia May 7 A 26 year old Amos Eugene Ward calling the Kanawha county court a kangaroo court demanded a change of venue while a continuance was granted until May 98 on charges connected to the $39 800 First National Bank of South Charleston robbery Ward claimed an innocent man was kangarooed in court for 60 years and said he wanted to be prosecuted not persecuted He confessed to the holdup and implicated Leonard Jackson and Raymond Duvall who remained a fugitive

Mild winter leaves $100000 in road fund
Charleston W Va May 83 Old man winter’s acts of kindness during the past season left the state road commission with 100000 for maintenance work that wouldn’t have been available had the cold season been as severe as 1935 and 1938. Road Commissioner Burr Simpson said 88977.00 was spent for snow removal and paving work during the past winter, compared with 195643.49 for the same purpose in 1935-36. The 1936-37 total was 93425.41. He noted the extra funds allow spring repairs and defended snow removal as a vital maintenance phase. Snow removal prevents moisture damage and wear, he said, and opening roads for travel was not the only measure.

Jimmy Hatfield allegedly killed his stepfather Walter Dotfon during a mountain cabin dispute. McGuire faced charges over the killing of his in laws, Andrew and Mrs Marshall, after a January arrest following a high school gathering. At 4 o clock today a Carolina home on Bland street hosts a meeting for attendees. Coach John Lorman presided over the assembly at Bluefield High School where letters were awarded to Billy Bratton John Saunders Simon Peoples Reginald Kelley and Ziv Palmer. A spelling bee honors Ollig Bradshaw Daniel Adams and Dessie Taylor were announced. The Mount Zion sewing circle meets at 3 30 today at Mrs Winston Cheatham on Ridge street with President Mrs M T Watkins presiding. Mrs Watkins spoke on the PTA Institute held April 12 at Bluefield State Teachers College. Officers re elected include Mrs Mabel Watkins Prof C C Carter Ruby Johnson and Nettle B Wright. The flower bowl went to Alma Adams for most patrons. Mary Coleman led the primary division in songs for National Music Week. The Lawson Street PTA held its final meeting of the year with remarks of appreciation by Mrs S L Wade.

Washington May 5 The bituminous coal commission postponed hearings on discounts for Bott coal sales to June 27 after a study of objections from Cleveland Richmond and Boston to discount provisions.
