Beaver and Princeton high school band groups ask the county board to extend band directors to an 11 month schedule thus allowing summer practice. The committee noted $2000 in uniforms and several hundred dollars for large instruments. A Caperton avenue group urged not to use their building next year citing fire hazards. The board approved portable classroom units to be placed at Thorn school for Caperton avenue children next year and authorized buses to transport band members to the state convention at Huntington. House approves regional university compact for Meharry
The House approved by 236 to 45 a resolution enabling the southern states to establish regional universities and take Meharry medical college as a regional Negro institution. The plan would transfer lands and endowment income to the states under a February compact. A board of control would include the governors of each state. The measure faced opposition over segregation but supporters argued it would improve educational opportunities without cost to the national government.

Highway Projects Let By Public Road Group
Five highway projects were let and four other low bids were recommended to the Public Roads Administration for acceptance by the state road commission. One award covers 4.6 miles of two lane concrete pavement on U.S. 50 between Smithburg and Sherwood in Doddridge County. Low bidder is W. H. Ringwald & Sons of Chillicothe, Ohio, at 382617.45 dollars.

Four New Radio Towers Go Up At WHIS Harry Heights
Radio Station WHIS at its Harry Heights transmitter is erecting four new 200 foot towers to boost power from 1000 to 5000 watts day and night. One tower has reached 60 feet, and the 1000 watt transmitter will be replaced by a 5000 watt unit. Chief engineer Pat Flanagan expects completion by July 15, doubling signal strength and extending coverage.

In Roanoke on May 4 the Virginia State Federation of Labor convention cleared the way for reelection of President J. B. Smith of Buckroe Beach and other officers. I. C. Welsted of Richmond, secretary, and A. E. Wilson of Roanoke were nominated. Smith and Welsted asserted the movement is in working peoples hands.
