May 3 dispatches report crowds battering morgue doors in Lodz after a massacre and soldiers firing on rioters killing four and wounding several. A Warsaw stranger shoots a police sergeant. Disorder expected after church mass as troops flood streets. Rumors of Russian fleet movements and coal convoys abroad circulate.
The Southern Newspaper Publishers Association held a Charleston session with routine business. Montgomery Ala and Louisville Ky were candidates for the next meeting site, and Montgomery was chosen. Officers elected: President J O C Hemphill Charleston News and Courier. Vice President G J Palmer Houston Post. Secretary and Treasurer F P Glass Montgomery Advertiser. They visited the navy yard and other sights and were banqueted with Governor Heywood addressing them.
The American Railway Appliance exhibition opened at noon in Washington with cabinet members supreme court judges diplomatic corps and 200 delegates of the International Railway Congress. GEORGE A POST opened the exhibit and the event drew many exhibitors across 875 displays in seventy one buildings. Secretary Morton gave the principal address.
The Crerar Clinch Company and other firms faced a broad strike as teamsters stopped deliveries. A guard formed by labor supporters clashed with arriving black strike breakers on Forty sixth Street, injuring eleven. No serious injuries reported.

The protected cruiser Galveston under Commander William G. Butler reached Norfolk navy yard with 49 sailors in double irons after a troubled voyage from Key West and Galveston. Butler refused comment on the disorder, but crew members criticized his tyrannical rule as the cause of the unrest aboard.
Robert Jones, a Black man from Dinwiddie County, was jailed as an accomplice after Benjamin Sheffield was held on $500 bail for grand jury appearances. The case revolves around Luna Joyner, who disappeared near Church Road two years ago. Mrs. Joyner died from grief last year. Mary Lattop of Crewe has pursued the matter, asserting the child is alive.

The Walter Ferguson general store at Matewan was burglarized early Tuesday, with about one thousand dollars in goods stolen. The burglars were captured and most of the stolen items recovered.
