Ten crew members from the cruiser Tacoma were roughly handled by Santiago police. One sailor is reported dead, with injuries to others prompting an official inquiry.
Associated Press dispatch from Santiago Cuba reports a fight at Cafe Leon de Oro after a banquet for Tacoma sailors. Ensign Brisbin was knocked down as police fired revolvers and used machetes. Tacoma fireman Henry Lee likely died. Eleven crew members wounded. Police suspended. investigation begun by American consul Holaday.
The Navy Department received a cablegram from Commander Wood of the Dixie in Havana. It relays a report from the Taco Ma commander at Santiago, Cuba, stating trouble occurred between some sailors on shore leave and local authorities.
A Baltimore and Ohio fast flyer derailed near Pleasant View 40 miles below Parkersburg. Twenty were injured, two fatally. Notables among the injured include Judge William A Ohley and Captain T R Cowell. The cause is linked to track condition. relief trains and hospital transport followed.

Special to the Daily Telegraph reports a major explosion at the Whipple Mine in Scarbro Fayette County near Loup Creek on the C&O line. Charleston reports indicate three miners were killed with five missing and four seriously injured after an explosion at the Scarbro mine. Of ninety four workers, thirty left before the blast and fifty three escaped through a second shaft. four of the escapees were burned. The mine, supplied by a 125 000 cubic foot per minute fan, faced an unclear cause likely from firing in the face of workings. Names of the dead were Ned Burgess Ras Wiley and Ira Kelly.

May Day found workers in only a small number of trades in New York ready to demand higher wages. Attention focused on possible strikes by senior officers of Coastwise Steamers after wage demands. Only seven of seventeen lines with New York terminals accepted the new schedule. The general manager of the lines remains central to the talks.

Johnetown May 1 physicians at Windber Hospital announced seven Foustwell miners entombed 100 hours will recover though not yet on solid foods. Miners spent the day celebrating the rescue as news spread from the shaft to the town.

A fire at 255 Wabash Avenue in Chicago injured about twenty women. The Story & Clark Piano Company occupied the first floor while the Lotus Lunch Club on the upper floors housed women patrons. Panic sent many to fire escapes where crowding, falls, and some leap from windows caused most injuries.
Albany N Y May 1 Governor Hughes suffers a Senate defeat as 35 to 16 adopt the judiciary committee report on allowing Hatch Kelsey counsel to appear in the removal matter. Three Democrats Cahalen Fuller and Taylor sided with the governor while Raines denounced Senators Armstrong and Page. Hatch plans to address the Senate in support of Kelsey.
Washington reports that railways south of the Potomac and Ohio and east of the Mississippi will withdraw all reduced party rates effective June 1. The interstate commerce commission had ruled such reductions must be open to the public, but lines now revert to regular individual fares.
New York May 1. George B Scrugham manager of the international policy-holders committee with Charles F Carrington and Chas Stirrup assistant managers were arraigned on forgery charges connected with the New York Life director election. Cases were continued until Monday and the defendants released on bail.
Seven people were injured, three seriously, when an old three story frame house at 35 Horatio Street burned in Greenwich Village. Police rescued several others endangered by the flames as the century old structure burned.
