Kenya burns tusks and rhino horn to protest poaching
President Uhuru Kenyatta set fire to 105 tons of ivory and more than a ton of rhino horn in Nairobi in a dramatic act against illegal wildlife trade. The pyres, forming 11 ivory piles, symbolized a stance that ivory has no value outside protecting elephants, with Kenya aiming to push a global ivory trade ban at CITES in South Africa. The destruction, funded by jet fuel, was intended to deter poaching despite questions about effectiveness and border corruption fueling demand.
