The government reports March forecasting gauge rose for a third consecutive month, jobless claims remain near the lowest since October, and factory orders climbed strongly. President Bush orders agencies to limit profit demands when states sell major assets like airports or bridges, aiming to unlock more than $200 billion in projects.
As spring term ends, Mercer County pupils prepare for field trips after a district bus incident. A Virginia bus driver was convicted for encouraging riders to punch and kick an assumed head lice carrier, while a student reports paying $1 daily to ride the city bus.
Adam P. Walton, 18, of Greensburg PA, was arrested April 7 after police found 1500 dollars of stolen electronics and a homemade music video confession in his car. Detective Williams said Walton rapped about breaking into a store to steal the gear used for his recording. Walton, a high school senior, faces burglary theft and receiving stolen property charges and denies linking the video to the April 2 Greensburg stereo shop theft.
On May 2 from 9 a.m. to noon United Methodist Women of Trinity Methodist Church College Avenue Bluefield sponsor a Health Fair in Asbury Hall. Free cholesterol and blood pressure screening and glucose testing offered by a registrar. Public invited.
The forecast calls for sunny conditions today with a high in the lower 70s and west winds 5 to 10 mph. Tonight will be clear with a low in the upper teens or 20s depending on location.
Riots, arson and looting engulfed Los Angeles and extended to San Bernardino as the death toll rose to 18 and about 450 injured. National Guard troops moved into neighborhoods amid curfews and citywide shutdowns with fires burning near downtown and Hollywood Boulevard.
Demonstrations sparked across the United States denouncing the Rodney King verdict with calls for a federal civil rights probe. In Atlanta rioting injured several and damaged property while other cities saw mainly peaceful protests. Police reported dozens of arrests as demonstrations extended from California to Maryland and Wisconsin.
Mercer County students excel at the West Virginia Math Field Day in Morgantown earning a first a second and a fifth place across divisions. Members Angela Morris Dirk Stanley Ashley Goad Rogerio Gatto Bobby Saddler and Neema Salimi led the achievements with Stanley claiming a state first for sixth grade and Salimi second while Goad finished fifth in seventh grade.
Governor J Douglas Wilder announced a plan to advance a zero tolerance bill targeting any alcohol in a juvenile driver blood stream. The proposal, tied to youth protection, follows prior introductions and notes ongoing review by legislators.
Mercy County Academic Boosters sponsored a Thursday night Excellence Dinner at Con ard College Mercer. More than $18,000 in booster awards were distributed including $750 for each area valedictorian $650 for each salutatorian eight $600 Carl Holland Memorial Scholars awards and the $1,000 Ruth Alderson Scholarship presented by Rick Krout to Anita Faye Hall of Ma-. Emma Dean White of Athens High School was inducted into the Hall of Fame by MCAB chair Carol McClaugher. Area valedictorians honored included Paul Hodges Dorothy Hetzel Brenda Sparks Wayne Pelts David Harvey and Joe Fuda. Nancy Anderson Princeton High valedictorian and Kyle Geiger of AHS spoke praising Hodges and the influence of teachers who pushed students to excel. Rhonda Pennington Keen Segneee and Sabrina Terry highlighted teachers Hetzel Sparks and Pelts for encouragement and open doors for student achievement. Special recognition went to National Merit Scholars finalists and semi-finalists Rhonda.
