Criminal court reconvenes this morning with the case of D C Red Baldwin charged with maiming in the wounding of a colored woman in Bluefield. Homer Thompson also indicted for maiming. Slots remain on the April docket ahead of May 12 circuit court convening.
Mercer county pursues a quota of 3220 members for the West Virginia Society for Crippled Children. Princeton groups canvass towns, aiming to raise 100000 memberships at $1 each to fund treatment for 350 cripples yearly. Mercer counts 39 crippled children. state reports 8000 statewide. In a criminal action, Burley Day charged with shooting Deputy J. H. Atwell was slated for July 23 after a continuance bid citing his wife as a key witness. Day is out on bail with R. B. Day and Mrs. Belle Hagerman as sureties. Prosecution names special prosecutor Leon P. Miller and attorney J. N. Harman assisting for the Atwell side. The note also reports the death of Mrs. Martha A. Douglas and funeral plans for her son R. E. Douglas’s family context.
Mrs. Everett Hancock welcomes a son named Jack Logan born Tuesday night at Grace hospital. Roanoke's Paul Cornett, a former Welch resident, is in town for a brief business visit as others pass through for shopping and meetings. Local residents including Mrs. J W Thomas, Ray McGee, Nelson Hood and L B Nash are listed among visitors and callers. A Newark couple observed tragedy as a husband killed himself after learning of his wife and brother love affair and pending divorce. note notes of the couple's names appear in the report.
Mr and Mrs J Douglas were called to Phillipi West Virginia on Tuesday for an unspecified reason according to the brief OCR item from the local page.
Mrs Charles Cohen of Charleston named president of the West Virginia Federation of Temple Sisterhood at its ninth annual assembly in Fairmont. Other officers include Mrs J S Brodin Parkersburg and Miss Lettie Swartz Charleston. next assembly set for Williamson in fall 1931.
Nick Varillion, Welch restaurant owner, was fined $25 and costs after a jury found him guilty of assaulting J. S. Rover. The incident occurred on a street near the railroad station when Rover attempted to collect a rent debt.
Bertie Booth faced attempted murder charges for injuring Owen Baldwin but pled guilty to unlawful wounding. With Baldwin consent the state dropped the attempted murder count. Booth, without counsel, was sentenced by Judge Counts to one year in state prison.
Dr. and Mrs. G. T. Eppling leave today for their Giles County country home. Their city residence is leased for the summer to Mr. and Mrs. Sturgis Maurice who will soon relocate from Kimball.
Beckley W Va April 30 Bishop A V W Darlington Huntington reported steady progress in European missionary efforts of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Darlington who oversees missions in several European countries just returned from an overseas inspection tour.
Louisville April 30 The League of Women Voters selected a slate to reelect Miss Belle Sherwin for a six year term as president. Her address reviewed a decade of achievements in maternity and infancy legislation naturalization and citizen rights.

Twenty five suspected members of Chicago's liquor network tied to Capone were indicted for conspiracy to violate the national prohibition act. The center was Italian Importing and Manufacturing Co, taken over 1927 by Charles Argento with Capone associate. Still operators and distributors across Illinois and Wisconsin named.
In Richmond on April 30 a federal court permanently enjoined the Standard Oil Company of Virginia from operating under the Standard Oil name and bond to prevent future violations of the restraining order. The order also confirms a 1929 temporary injunction. The New Jersey firm has operated in the state since 1906 while the Virginia company began in September 1929. Officials said similar petitions are before courts in South Carolina and West Virginia.
