GOP leader linked to Democratic call eavesdropping probe
Virginia authorities probe whether Edmund A Matricardi III of the Republican Party of Virginia secretly listened to a March 22 Democratic conference call in a case that could involve state and possibly federal wiretap laws. Officials said the investigation aims to determine if the call was recorded and how access to numbers and passwords was obtained. The case centers on a sensitive political matter involving Gov. Mark Warner and senior lawmakers.

School ends blame focus shifts after pastor turned counselor case
In St Louis the district chief said church leaders who settled sex abuse lawsuits against defrocked priest and former counselor James Beine should bear the responsibility, not the school system. Beine faces three sexual misconduct counts after alleged indecent exposure to two boys, age 9 and 10. He worked as a counselor for 11 years before suspension. The archdiocese says Beine was removed in 1977 amid abuse allegations. Since 1994 eight lawsuits alleged molestation by Beine as a priest. The district learned of lawsuits long ago but not outcomes until last week. Beine remains jailed on $100,000 bond.
