Construction starts in early April on a new McDowell County DMV office in downtown Welch in the vacant JC Penny building. It will employ about seven people and aim to open by early September, per Rachel Lester of the county economic development authority. Adjacent buildings have been razed for parking and the nearby Sudduth Street building will be condemned. The project accompanies other downtown Welch economic initiatives including a Social Security office and a proposed theater.
