Four Major Trunk Lines in the East Planned
New York March 27 The Interstate Commerce Commission set an April 18 hearing on the Van Sweringen proposed Nickel Plate merger. Railroad officials expect the four major trunk line system plan around New York Central, Pennsylvania, Baltimore and Ohio, and Nickel Plate to clarify construction in the East in weeks ahead. Objections by Pennsylvania to some features may be aired before the ICC when Nickel Plate consolidation is reviewed. The Van Sweringens may need to compromise to gain Pennsylvania support for the Lehigh Valley or Lackawanna, and for the Baltimore and Ohio to protect its Reading acquisition.
