West Virginia Weatherization Grant Boosts Low Income Homes
The U S Department of Energy awarded West Virginia a 3.2 million dollar grant to weatherize homes used by low income residents. Weatherization is projected to cut annual energy costs by about 218 dollars per home according to Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham. The state Office of Economic Opportunity will distribute the funds as part of a Weatherization Assistance Program that has grown 50 percent from 2001 levels. In a separate decision, the state Surface Mine Board allowed broader DEP discretion on pre mining well surveys to protect drinking water near mining sites. Rockspring Development Co of East Lynn challenged the shift, arguing for limited sampling. DEP insists on 12 monthly samples per well.
